Feb Baby Maxwell Update

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

I would be remiss if I didn’t begin by thanking so many of you for your faithful prayers on our behalf. Melanie and I have been encouraged and challenged by your faithfulness. Encouraged that we are so graciously remembered before our Father’s throne; challenged as we seek to be faithful in lifting up others we know of with needs.

The biggest news we have on Baby Maxwell’s progress is related to a recent Dr’s appointment. Due to the challenges with Susannah, we were encouraged to have a Level 2 ultra-sound at 18-20 weeks. This happened about a week ago. Let me digress briefly into some information on a Level 2 in case readers aren’t familiar with this. We had a number of Level 2 ultra-sounds (L2 US) with Susannah. An L2 US uses regular US equipment, but the technician spends more time measuring different aspects of the baby, looking at organs, and checking things on the child you didn’t know needed to be checked. A L2 US is also differentiated from a standard one in that a specialist, in our case, a peri-natalogist, reviews the scan pictures and will even operate the US machine himself/herself to check things. A L2 US, last pregnancy, is what found the stomach issue in Susannah. What is grieving to us, is that though they are looking at all things related to the baby, it would be safe to rename the L2 US a “Down Syndrome Screen” as many of the measurements and things they look for are then correlated to Downs markers. These markers are of uncertain accuracy – many children with them don’t have Downs and vice versa. I can only image how many children are matched up against Down’s markers, possibly followed with more testing, and then their lives taken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_syndrome#Ethical_Issues). We are committed to loving, raising, and caring for any child God gives us, being special to us regardless of whether others apply the same label.

We would have liked to avoid the entire scan. But not knowing whether this child would need special care later on, we felt it was in his/her best interest to have it done. That would allow us to arrange the care he/she needed ahead of time instead of being in reactionary mode. We were prepared to have all kinds of bad news given to us.

Back to the appointment, we praise the Lord that neither the US technician nor the doctor were able to find anything that concerned them regarding what they saw. Everything looked great they said. This was a huge relief to Melanie and I. We couldn’t believe that they found nothing of concern. This obviously doesn’t mean there will not be challenges later on, but it does allow us to stay out of the “high-risk” category and select our doctor/hospital – something we’re now praying about.

The other big news is that Melanie is feeling baby move.

Thank you for your continued prayers for us as we journey through this pregnancy. We’re excited to be approaching the half-way point.

Yuba City and the East Bay Conference Report

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Last Thursday was a rainy, cool day in Yuba City. We had a quiet day at the hotel, catching up on computer things, and the children worked on school. That evening, as we girls were setting up the book tables, a young boy offered to help. He had a sweet spirit, and he told me about a business he has selling candy bars. We were amazed to hear about his diligence and industry, but then what impressed us was when we heard what he did with the money he earned: he gives it to the poor! A lady provided a dinner for us: complete with tri-tip marinated meat. This was only the second time we’ve had this meat, and it’s the most unbelievable tender, juicy meat. Thank you for this special treat :-) .

Friday morning we drove through stiff winds, but we made it to Livermore safely. Cornerstone Fellowship graciously let us use their facilities, and the rooms they gave us worked out extremely well. Meals were provided Friday night and Saturday—we are grateful for the wonderful food!

Conference Sign

Many families we talked to had driven several hours to be able to come. We are grateful for their extra investment of time. Friday night’s music session for the most part went smoothly, although we had a few minor things, like the dobro being knocked off it’s stand. It wasn’t even noticed by the person starting the next song, so things continued :-) .

Since there are so many of us, we have chances to talk to quite a few of the families throughout the weekend. After the conference, we love to sit around and share about the different people we talked to and what they told us regarding their lives and what the Lord Jesus is doing. One very special highlight was meeting a family who started a nursing home church last year. We were thrilled to chat with them, as brief as it was, and to meet another family who had started such a ministry.

We will be posting some more thoughts on the trip later, but we wanted to give you a weekend report!

A Look Back at the Fair Week

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

This might seem odd to post now. Why a post on last year’s County fair in January? I was about to delete this post that was written last year when I had second thoughts about it. We had discussed it and decided not to post it because we didn’t want the focus to be us. That still is our heart’s desire, but as I reread this now, I feel, it might be a needed encouragement for families to be busy about God’s leading. So please as you read this, it isn’t about us, but about the Lord Jesus Who wants us to be busy telling others about the reality of Heaven and Hell, and Jesus, Who is the ONLY Savior of our souls and way to the Father.

Steve

(Update previously written by Sarah)

Thank you all for your prayers during the fair week. We were so grateful. It was an amazing thing to be able to hand out tracts, make balloons, and share Jesus. One girl I spoke with, when I asked where she was going to spend eternity, looked a bit puzzled, and asked me, “What’s that?” I remember another woman said she was going to face it when she got there. Sadly, it would be too late. May we all be faithful to share Christ!

Usually I’m the one taking pictures in the family, but during fair week, Dad took quite a few pictures. He even went to the grandstands to get a different perspective of our booth. We hope you are blessed by a pictorial view into the fair week.

Cold Temperatures, Wind, and Snow

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

We are so grateful to be home today. The front we caught up to (near Flagstaff) and then stayed ahead of yesterday has now reached Kansas, and we have cold temperatures, strong wind, and snow. If we hadn’t been able to get ahead of the storm, we would have been stuck somewhere for a day or two.

Thank you, Jesus, for bringing us home!

32 Hours and 1900 miles Later

Monday, January 28th, 2008

We are HOME! It was an incredible 32 hours, but we are safely home, and Uriah is unpacked, and after dinner and devotions, we’re ready to get some rest. Thank you to everyone for praying.

We’ll comment more about the trip later. :-)

Ladies’ Retreat in Lenexa, KS this Saturday

Monday, January 28th, 2008

We wanted to post and let ladies know that Mom will be speaking at a Ladies’ Retreat in the Kansas City area this Saturday, February 2nd, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The registration deadline is the 30th, so if you are interested, we’ve included the link here.

We’re still motoring along, heading closer to home! :-)

Still driving…

Monday, January 28th, 2008

We are now in Oklahoma, and the sun is definitely up :-) . Dad was able to sleep for 5 hours while Christopher drove. During that time, a lot of the family was able to sleep, but we always kept one person awake to talk to the driver! We have managed to stay ahead of the storm, and the areas we are now passing through will have even stronger winds than we’re experiencing right now this afternoon.

Thank you for your prayers. we are very grateful. We hope to be home by dinnertime–an amazing whirlwind drive home.

Through a blizzard and rain…

Monday, January 28th, 2008

It is now 1:00 a.m. and we just filled up with diesel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. About 30 miles west of Flagstaff the rain instantly turned to snow, and Dad drove through some very tough driving conditions with the snow and wind swirling around Uriah. Dad sought the Lord if we should continue or stop in Flagstaff, but the snow eventually lessened, and Dad knew if we stopped, we might have to stay in Flagstaff for awhile as they were expecting snow throughout the night and into the morning. We finally drove out of the snow, and into rain, and finally out of even the rain!

Uriah has been perfect for people to be able to sleep during the night. The plan is to continue driving on, with Dad and Christopher trading off driving.

Thank you for your prayers.

Only for Jesus,
Sarah for the rest of the family

Afternoon Update

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

The current plan is to go to Albuquerque, New Mexico, tonight, but we might even continue driving on. Depending on the weather and slow downs, we’ll likely arrive early in the morning. Thank you for your prayers. We are very grateful. We have been driving through strong winds, but Dad and Uriah are doing a good job :-) .

Prayer Request for Today

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

After an amazing weekend conference (we’ll be reporting on that later), we are now heading 1900 miles home. We wanted to post a quick prayer request. Flagstaff, Arizona is expecting quite a bit of snow, and Dad is praying what route the Lord would have us take. Our hope is to continue with our planned route (through Flagstaff), and not stop in Kingman, Arizona tonight so that we can make it through Flagstaff and the snow before it get’s too heavy. It also appears we’ll be facing very strong and gusty winds.

Thank you for your prayers! We’ll update later today.

The Trip Continues

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

We continue to be grateful for the Lord’s blessing on this trip. It’s funny, because although we’ve been gone two and a half weeks, it feels like much longer :-) . Eight conferences done and two left: Yuba City tonight and the East Bay area this weekend.  Our plan is to drive home in 3 days (beginning Sunday), via the southern route, instead of cold temperatures and snow going home I-80.

The last two conferences, San Luis Obispo area, and Fresno, went well. It’s amazing the little blessings: people who offer to help carry things out of the church after the conference, words of encouragement from those attending, a delicious dinner of beef stew and rolls in Fresno, etc. We had two weeks without colds, and then Saturday and Sunday, two of the family came down with colds. Yet, even in that, the Lord has shown Himself faithful. The two have felt miserable, but in no way has the trip been hindered, and the two are feeling better.

Except for our smoking descent the other night, Uriah has done very well this past week. We continue to be grateful for him, and the space he has provided. One concern we had at the beginning of the trip was the unknowns of being able to park him at each hotel (the guys camp out in the bus at night while we girls and Dad and Mom are in the hotel). Every night the Lord has provided a place to park Uriah at the hotel. What a blessing!

Joyfully His,
Sarah for the rest of the family

A Smoking Descent!

Monday, January 21st, 2008

The second weekend conference is now over. Each conference has been such a blessing in its own way by the people we meet, the stories we hear, and the Lord Jesus working in lives. We arrived in the LA area with no traffic issues Thursday night. It was very picturesque to see the lights of the city as we drove out of the mountains.

Friday’s set up went well, and we had time to do a run through our songs. Our coordinators brought dinner for us. They also took us to a Vietnamese restaurant on Saturday evening after the conference for a cultural experience. None of us had eaten Vietnamese food before, so it was a treat.

Church in LA

(The LA church where the conference was held.)

There was a good group for the sessions Friday evening, and families continue to enjoy the music. Saturday was a busy day for everyone. Joseph, John, and Jesse help Dad, Mom, Christopher, and I get set up for our sessions, and then throughout the day, Joseph and John help Dad and Mom with any other speaking needs they may have.

Anna, Jesse, and Mary are a great book table team and run it very efficiently. At lunch, a sweet mom had provided a delicious meal for us, which was a special blessing. The message we shared throughout the weekend was extremely well received. We are grateful to each family who took the time to come to the conference this weekend. We pray you will experience fruit that will be eternal.

Going around downtown LA

(Downtown LA as we went on the outskirts of it.)

We know many are praying and we are very grateful. As we were coming out of the mountains today on a very long steep grade, the boys said they smelled something burning. Dad took the next exit he could, and we pulled off. John hopped out, with Joseph close behind, and they said our front wheel was smoking! Most of us hurried out of the bus to see what was happening. After some examination, it was decided that the brakes had become very hot, and the buildup of oil on the rim from a leaking seal was smoking. Once Dad confirmed the other front wheel was also pretty hot, it meant that there was nothing seriously wrong with that wheel. Dad had slowed way down, used a lower gear, and pumped the brakes as we descended, but decided from then on, we would be going down even slower. We were grateful that we didn’t have a serious problem, and we started off again to help cool the wheels. Uriah continues to provide excitement to a trip that we’ve not experienced before!

The Grand Canyon

Friday, January 18th, 2008

We woke up early Wednesday morning so that we could get started on our way to the Grand Canyon. The night before, John had noticed a notch in one of Uriah’s tires, and Dad felt since it was quite deep, we should have it looked at somewhere to see if we needed a new one. As we were approaching Flagstaff, Dad was able to call a tire place, that had been referred to him by a mechanic. We found the tire shop, the man looked at the tire, and he recommended that we replace both tag tires due to the “injury” and that fact that both were eight years old. The guy told Dad he was lucky (we know otherwise :-) ) because they were the only warehouse in northern Arizona that had those tires, and since it was a cold day, he had men that could do it right then. We had our family Bible time while the tires were being changed. We knew if the process took too long, we wouldn’t be able to go to the Grand Canyon. But, around noon, we were on our way, and arrived at the Grand Canyon around 1:30.

It was an exciting feeling to walk to the edge of the South Rim and gaze at God’s amazing creation. The brochure said the Grand Canyon took millions of years to form, and yet even Jesse (13) could wonder why all or most rivers aren’t in canyons that deep. Christopher mentioned as a side note, scientists were not able to study the actual forming of the Grand Canyon, but they have been able to study the Little Grand Canyon at Mt. St. Helens which is 1/40th the size of the Grand Canyon and was formed in one day.

We spent some time taking in the scene and admiring it, before we walked along the trail. There were icy spots on the trail, but it was not windy, so we had a pleasant time together as we walked. It seemed the more you looked at the Grand Canyon, the more you could see. We marveled at all the different trails that could be hiked way down in the Canyon.  We are very grateful that the Lord gave us those few hours; what a blessing.

We are now in Anaheim, California. Again, we felt the Lord’s hand driving here yesterday afternoon and evening. In spite of all the traffic, we didn’t “experience” even one slow down, which was wonderful. We are praying for this weekend’s conference and look forward to seeing some of you!

Sarah for the rest of the family

Fountain Hills and Show Low Report

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

It is incredible to see the Lord continue to work out details regarding Uriah. We were preparing to leave Tucson Monday morning, and John found that the transmission dipstick was dry–not a good thing! Dad found a truck place that had the fluid, so we packed out of the hotel and headed there. A mechanic came out to look at it, and he showed Dad a “secret way” to check the fluid level electronically. This indicated that the fluid was perfect, so we were very glad that we hadn’t been running on low transmission fluid. We also had had a oil leak, and Dad asked them if they would be able to fix that. The mechanic assured Dad they could, and it wouldn’t take long. We had a sweet time doing family devotions while Uriah was getting fixed. Soon, we were on our way to Fountain Hills. The conference coordinator had invited us to a picnic, and we arrived in time.

Fountain Hills has a very nice park with a beautiful fountain that goes off every hour.

We had a blessed time of fellowship with several families; thank you!

The set up continues to go smoothly for the conferences. Everyone has their own jobs, and it’s great teamwork as we prepare for the evening. Monday night went very well, and we pray lives were eternally affected. As we packed out of the conference, many people helped us carry things out to Uriah, which was a blessing!

Tuesday we headed up in the mountains for Show Low. It was a pretty drive; we went from seeing cactus to pine trees. Show Low is a mountainous community, and we were blessed by the families that came out for the conference.

Weekend Report

Monday, January 14th, 2008

We are grateful to each of our conference coordinators for all the work they put into the conference. After set up Friday afternoon, we had family devotions in the bus, and then the coordinator brought us dinner: a delicious taste of the southwest.

The music session went well, and our audience was the most interactive of all the groups we’ve sung for so far! In between sessions, a highlight for our family is being able to speak with families. Our prayer is that the Lord Jesus is glorified in everything shared during each session and in the other conversations.

After listening to our church service via cell phone to the nursing home yesterday morning, Dad, Joseph, John, and Jesse were out at the bus, when a car pulled up with a mom and son, who had attended the conference, They had been surprised to see our bus behind a hotel as they were returning from their morning church service, which is amazing since they didn’t know where we were staying and would have only had a second to see the bus between buildings.  They decided to go to Trader Joe’s and purchase John some birthday gifts since yesterday was his birthday. They brought a large bag of goodies and a huge several foot-long box of cookies! We were very touched by their thoughtfulness to John. Thank you :-) !

Tonight we’ll be going to Fountain Hills (outside of Phoenix) for an evening conference.

Only for Jesus,
Sarah

The Beauty of God’s Handiwork

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Our family was really looking forward to visiting Carlsbad Caverns and seeing the wonder of God’s handiwork. That is why there was some disappointment when Uriah was “broken,” and we would not be able to stop at the Caverns on our way to Tucson.

Oh, but God’s handiwork is not limited to old, cold stone, and it is best observed in the lives of His children. We simply exchanged one opportunity to praise God for another. Late in the morning, it became obvious that the part we needed was simply not available in Carlsbad and to overnight a part in would mean we would be late for our Tucson conference.. We had been to every parts store and machinist in Carlsbad and there were no local options. Without God clearly intervening, we were stuck.

I have to admit, in my flesh I really prefer to be “in control” and have no problems. However, if difficulties mean my children (and their father) grow to a deeper level of trust in the mighty hand of the Lord God, then that is my desire.

So after all options were exhausted, God began to work. He opened doors to make a fabricated part to get us going and then provided a new factory part in El Paso. I was clearly out of my comfort zone driving Uriah in downtown El Paso rush hour traffic as we tried to find the coach lines that was going to sell us a new part. We even had the opportunity to meet new friends and share Christ’s love with them.

Serving a risen Lord sure beats a stale, dead religion any day even though it will mean we are out of our comfort zone.

Safely Here in Tucson!

Friday, January 11th, 2008

On Our Way Again!

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

After several hours of working, a mechanic took the bearings Dad had purchased locally, to a machinist who machined a part, to make the bearings work. Then, he assembled it. We are very grateful for his help! We are bypassing touring Carlsbad Caverns, and we’re headed for El Paso. A bus place there has the part, and we will see if we can get it from them yet tonight. We’re so grateful that Uriah is back on the road.

New Mexico Disappointment

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

We’re still in the city of Carlsbad, not visiting the Caverns like the original plan had been. As we were packing out of the hotel this morning, John discovered that a pully (which is used to cool the engine) had self-destructed. We were able to drive the bus to an auto parts store, and from there, we’ve gone to many different auto parts stores in Carlsbad, and no one seems to have the part we need. Dad, John, and Joseph are working to try to get a temporary fix. If that doesn’t work, we’ll stay here and wait for the new part to arrive tomorrow morning. Then, we’ll be on our way to Tucson for our weekend conference.

Please pray that we can get Uriah working very soon!

Now in New Mexico

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

We’re now in Carlsbad, New Mexico—a first for most of us, with the exception of Dad and Mom.

Last night’s conference in Waco was a blessing. We were delighted in seeing two families we have known through e-mail: one we’ve met before, and the other we hadn’t met in person. What a blessing to be able to see them.

Uriah continues to hang in there. We stopped at a truck repair place today, because Dad was concerned about some oil leaking from a wheel hub and wanted to check it out. A man was very helpful and even came out to look at it and give Dad a little informative lesson (tonight we saw we lost that hubcab—oops!). Mom is a pro at making lunch, and the bus makes it very easy to spread out a bit. We wrote postcards to our nursing home friends today; Mom even has a system for that.

We’re excited to be able to see Carlsbad Caverns tomorrow morning. We normally don’t have time to sight-see on these trips, but we are getting up early and will drive late to be able to see the Caverns. We’ll be sure to post pictures later.

Only for Jesus,
Sarah

In Texas

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Thank you for your continued prayers. Uriah has had some issues, but he’s still running. We discovered the air conditioner didn’t work, so we had several warm days (it didn’t feel like January for temperatures to be in the upper 70’s and humid!). But, we’re glad for a cool front, and the pleasant temperatures inside. Uriah also had an engine leak, but the boys were able to get it stopped. Please keep praying that Uriah will be able to keep on without any major repairs.

We drove to the Houston area yesterday afternoon, and we arrived safely late in the afternoon. For our first evening conference, the set up went smoothly! The coordinators graciously provided us a wonderful dinner. After three meals of sandwiches, we were very grateful for the home-cooked meal.

The sessions went well last night, and hearts were extremely receptive. We enjoyed our evening in the Houston area.

We’re doing a conference in Waco tonight!

Joyfully His,
Sarah

The Trip Begins

Monday, January 7th, 2008

We arrived safely tonight in Ennis, Texas. The last few days have been very busy in preparing for this trip, so it was nice to just climb into Uriah and rest. It was a delight to start out with having church with our dear friends at the nursing home, and we left from there. Uriah handled very well today, and Christopher even took a turn driving so that Dad could take a nap. We will drive the rest of the way to the Houston area tomorrow, where we’ll be doing an evening conference.

Thank you for your prayers. Dad has said that this is a trip of many unknowns due to our new transportation. We’ll have lots of new opportunities to trust the Lord each day.

Looking forward to meeting many of you over the next few weeks!

Joyfully His,
Sarah

Preparing for the Trip

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Life is in high gear here as we prepare to leave on a three week trip from church on Sunday. Everyone has something to do, and for this trip, we have called in the reserves – Grandad and Grandma. Grandma ironed thirty items for us earlier this week, and she came over to help Sarah yesterday. Both Grandad and Grandma helped today.

We are making curtains for the bus and doing some work inside to make it so that the boys can sleep on it for this trip. The bus just came back from the shop last night so there is much we couldn’t do until it was here. We are excited to take our first long trip on Uriah, and we are praising the Lord continually for His provision.

Trusting In Jesus,
Teri
