Settling Back into Home Life

Friday, October 31st, 2008

We are grateful to be home and are enjoying getting back into the swing of things. We were missing life back here in Leavenworth with Grandad, Grandma, Nathan, Melanie, and Abigail. At home, we are always “running” into each other. Maybe Grandad and Grandma are coming back from their walk, and we chat a little, or Nathan, who is working on unloading his car, might come over to talk.

Our Saturday was filled with bus unloading, giving Uriah a bath, and house work. When we start taking everything out of the bus, we’re amazed at how much we put into it for our trip. Dad and Joseph are working on painting and installing trim in the house. It is beginning to feel like we are actually going to move in soon.

Jesse and Christopher washed Uriah last weekend, which was quite a job considering he had only been washed one the entire trip. With the leaky windows, a truck wash was not a thing we wanted to do :-) .

These are the drying racks for trim after it is sprayed. Joseph invented them. There is lots of trim that goes into a house!

We found our garden had produced greatly while we were away! I've been processing many of the vegetables to save for the winter. Sarah made green salsa (with the green tomatoes), and we also made salsa from the red tomatoes.

Every Friday and Tuesday that we’re healthy we have Grandad and Grandma over for family Bible time. This Tuesday night we were especially excited because we were able to invite them back over, since we are now all well. We always look forward to our time with them.

It was wonderful to be able to go back to our church at the nursing home this Sunday. It is always such a delight to see the joy on their faces as we talk to them. Before we left on our trip we gave the residents itineraries of where we were going to be. We also wrote them postcards every Sunday so that they would be stay updated with our travels while we were gone.

Uriah at Lake Erie

Thursday, October 30th, 2008
The conference Saturday was only a few minutes from Lake Huron. After the conference, despite being very tired, we stopped at the lake for a few minutes by the water. Here is a picture of Uriah departing the parking lot.

First Step in Conversion

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

I was waiting until the right time to actually begin any real conversion efforts on the bus but we had to abandon that plan. “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). After having the new “openable” windows installed in Columbus, OH we have had bad water leaks. So we took the bus back to the shop that did the work for them to remedy the situation.

We drove home on a beautiful day which ended in a heavy downpour. To our disappointment there were still leaks. Since leaks mean rust and corrosion we had to do something. I felt it was likely that most of the leaks were coming from the windows because they didn’t have a uniform thickness of wood on the inside for the retaining ring to press against, only some temporary shims. That resulted in lack of uniformly tight pressure of the window’s flange on the outside against the skin and hence places where the water could seep in.

So I felt the Lord’s direction to go ahead and take everything out (again…ugh) so the walls and ceiling can be stripped. (We are going to try to work around the refrigerator and the couches to avoid having to take the windshield out. We aren’t too good at that, yet anyway.) After stripping it down to the metal frame we will have a rigid foam insulation sprayed in place.

Next change of plans… As the children were taking down the ceiling they discovered something else. We had paid to have each roof a/c unit specially framed out with welded metal tubing to maintain the integrity of the bus, since they have to cut the “backbone” of the bus to install the roof a/c’s. Long story shorter, we were disappointed to find that those special welded frames fell apart in the children’s hands when they took the ceiling down. “Thank You, Lord, for another chance to show Yourself mighty.”

Nathan and Melanie e-mailed us lots of Abigail pictures to post on the blog, so enjoy! We’re about to do our annual family photo, and it’ll be a true joy to have Abigail in the pictures (and maybe a challenge??!!); it’s been a long time since we had a little one around :-) . ~Sarah

A Taste Away from Home: Ham Delights

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Ham Delights
the M Family, Virginia

Yields: Approximately 50 small Ham Delights

½ stick melted butter
¼ teaspoon mustard (yellow)
¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon poppy seed
½ cup mayonnaise
1 small, finely chopped onion
1/3 pound shredded Swiss cheese
1 pound shredded ham (Can be shredded in a food processer)
About 50 small rolls (homemade or storebought)

Mix all the ingredients together. Cut open the rolls and spread the ham mixture inside. If you’re going to eat the ham delights right away, place them on a baking sheet and put them in 350 degree oven till they’re warmed through. If you aren’t going to eat them right away, wrap them (the roll with mixture) in foil, and put them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use them, then put them in the oven. Enjoy!

Abigail and her grandma

We took Grandad and Grandma and Nathan and Melanie out to dinner after we came home Tuesday night to thank them for all they did for us. Mom had some sweet time with Abigail :-).

We took Grandad and Grandma and Nathan and Melanie out to dinner after we came home Tuesday night to thank them for all they did for us. Mom (who doesn't have a cold :-) ) held Abigail for awhile during dinner, and I'm not sure if the flash surprised Abigail or she was just being a little fussy :-) . Mom enjoyed having some "Grandma/Granddaughter" time with Abigail.

I know there have been some hints about wanting to see pictures of Abigail, so enjoy the one above! Right now we’re keeping our distance because we do not want to pass our colds on to her. We’re anxiously awaiting the time we can hold her again :-) . Truly, children are a gift from our Lord Jesus.

Tour of Uriah

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

(This was written on our last traveling day, Tuesday :-) .)

Welcome aboard, Uriah! We’d like to take a few minutes to show you around. Today is a beautiful day, with not too much wind, but you’ll still want to watch your step.

This is looking from the front of Uriah. I wish we’d taken a picture of Joseph as he took this picture. You’ll notice his recliner, on your left, is empty. That’s his spot.

Mom is the official navigator (notice the atlas in her lap). Everyone is sitting in their normal places, except for John. He goes back and forth between the jumpseat, which is up near Dad, or in Mom’s recliner, when she’s in the jumpseat, or various other places. Mom will often sit in the jumpseat, to keep Dad company.

Let’s step past our seating area, and you’ll see our little “kitchen”, or “pantry”. Our refrigerator door is held closed with a bungee cord due to its propensity to pop open when we make a curve. The microwave is secured as it sits on top of the fridge, and we’ve really enjoyed it on the trip! The taller boys have an easier reach than we girls :-) . The shelves the boys built right beyond the fridge have been so useful; Mom has everything organized so that we have a lunch tub with our essentials, breakfast tub with food for the boys, and other misc. boxes and tubs.

Let’s step through the doorway, and you’ll see a set of shelves on the right side, and the first pair of bunkbeds on your left. The shelves hold many miscellaneous items; we added another set this trip, and I’m not sure what we did without them!

Round the slight corner, and you’ll see our hanging clothes.

To your right, is the last set of bunkbeds, and straight ahead is the restroom on board for your convenience (but the rest stops are preferred!).

Turning around to go back up front, here’s another view.

Finally, going back up front, looking toward the back, here are four of my wonderful brothers!

Thank you for stopping in to see around our metal tent :-) .

At Lake Erie

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

From the weekend:

We have been so blessed with being able to see so many wonderful places across the States and Canada! Many times we see famous places but may not have time to stop because of our schedule. On Saturday, after the conference (which was located a few minutes from Lake Erie), despite being very tired, we took about 15 minutes to stop and see the water.

Home!

It was a little before 5 p.m., when we arrived at home! We hurried to unload because a storm was just about to hit :-) . We were surprised by the greeting on the front door (via Nathan)…

Homeward Bound!

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Walking out of the hotel in the dark this morning, Anna and I both thought how it felt and looked like winter. Soon, the bus was loaded for the last time this trip, and we were quickly on our way! After being gone 5 weeks, we are anxious to be home again, but oh, what wonderful memories we have of these past weeks. Truly, we love serving together as a family.

We just drove through Indianapolis, which is about nine hours from home. Lord willing, we should be back late afternoon.

Thank you so much for all of you who have been praying for our family during this trip. Time and time again we have felt those prayers. We’ve gone through a lot of traffic  (Uriah doesn’t have any marks to show for that :-) ), we stayed quite healthy (only two had minor colds in the middle) until the end (and now several are quite miserable), we saw so many hearts open to the message, and much more!

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

The Last Conference on This Trip

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

It’s hard to believe that the conferences are all finished, and we are headed home—almost :-) . We are going to take Uriah back to the place that worked on it this summer to get our leaks fixed, among a few other things.  We’re here in Columbus, Ohio, for the bus work, and hopefully tomorrow everything can be taken care of, and we’ll be on our way home Tuesday.

Time for our final conference report :-) .

Lighthouse Gospel Church was situated in the small town of Port Burwell, just down the street from the shores of beautiful Lake Erie. We are grateful for this church hosting the conference.

Isnt this a wonderful entrance sign?!

Friday night held a full house. Even the balcony was being used, and several children were lined up, watching through the glass partition. Saturday again brought many families, even some that had driven awhile to come yet that morning. Those attending the conference were an incredible group, with hearts that were very open.

There were many young families at the conference, and it was wonderful to see all the little ones, and their parents who desired to raise their families for our Lord Jesus. There were also several older couples that came, and the ladies shared with Mom what a blessing the sessions had been.

The Trip Winds Down

Friday, October 17th, 2008

We are now on our last weekend conference for this trip. We’ll report on that when the weekend is finished, but we want to give a quick overview of our last two conferences: Wednesday night in Plain City, and Thursday night in Flint, Michigan.

Plain City was another wonderful conference. Set up went smoothly, and several families had brought in a delicious dinner for us.

Often parents will be in the back of a session with a little one. Anna captured this moment (Notice the purple ruler on the floor near the little girl? She was playing with Mary's ruler.)

A surprise highlight for me was seeing a girl (Hi, Hannah!!) whom I occasionally write and who has liked the Moody books.  I enjoyed meeting her “in person”.

We drove several hours to Flint, Michigan, Thursday morning. The weather had cooled down, making it a much more pleasant drive :-) . Michigan was the final state for we children to visit of the 48 continental states.

Anna held a three-month old baby during part of a session, and I know she was thinking about being able to hold our little niece very soon. A special treat for our family was meeting our copy editor, who has done almost all of our books.

We had our hardest border crossing yet today; we had the the paperwork ready, but it took about 45 minutes for the agency to process it, because several people were in line ahead of us. We were grateful we didn’t have a long drive, and we arrived here in Port Burwell mid-afternoon. More on the conference later!

For those of you who are waiting for those recipes posts, we will try to post the first one next week!

A Common Sight

Friday, October 17th, 2008

This is a common site at the book table: children love the Moody books!

A common sight at the book table! Children love the Moody books (and the opportunity to visit with Sarah at the book table)! And we love to hear the stories of children and families who  have been impacted for the Lord Jesus Christ as a result of reading the books.

Some More Excitement

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Earlier in this trip we shared a story about how Christopher was awakened from his nap as the bus came to an emergency stop on the side of the highway (you can’t help but notice such a quick stop while riding inside the bus!) and was told by Anna that the bus was on fire. Everyone needed to get off the bus; it was quite the way to wake up!

What happened yesterday to Mom and Dad might even top that!

They were resting before the conference started, and we children were working at setting things up. They woke up rather quickly when we told them that the police needed everyone off the bus. And it was probably less than 60 seconds after the police had evacuated the bus when the shooting started. Not cap guns. Not beanbag rounds. Not pepper spray. Real guns. Even though we were safely inside the church, the gun shots were loud and startled some of the children.

The Three Police Cars

The Three Police Cars

But, let me back up to give you the entire story! Yesterday, after we completed our family Bible time, we began to unload the bus so we could prepare for the conference that night. I was talking with the pastor of the church, when John asked me to get my camera. I followed him out to see a raccoon in the hollow of a tree that was near our bus. We kept our distance while watching the little creature. Over time, it came out of the tree hollow and was walking (or trying to) around the grass by the bus. As we observed it, we noticed that it was acting very strange. The raccoon appeared to not have any balance, seemed to be delirious, and even seemed partially paralyzed at times.

With the conference being that evening, and the possibility of little children around the raccoon, we decided that something needed to be done with it, as we wondered whether it might be rabid. John called the non-emergency police number, and found out that the city did not have an Animal Control department. This was not a problem, though, because the dispatcher said that she would send some of “her men” out to take care of the animal. John hung up the telephone, and was walking outside when two police cars and three police officers arrived. They talked with the pastor of the church and decided that it would be best to put the animal down. The officers asked Dad and Mom (who were resting), and Christopher (working on his computer), who were all on the bus, to go into the church. The officers then fired two rounds, which quickly put the raccoon out of its misery.

The cute, but very sick, raccoon in the tree hollow

Matthew 10:29 – “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father?”

Everyone, including the police officers, was sad to see this little animal suffer like this. But, we live in a world were sin and disease are pandemic. Everywhere we look there are results of Adam’s choice. The ultimate result of Adam’s disobedience is the fact that everyone, who has not accepted God’s free gift through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, will face hell. I pray that everyone who reads this blog knows where they will spend eternity.

Romans 8:22 – “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain until now.”

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

Our hearts are again full of gratefulness to our Lord Jesus for all that He continues to do in each conference. We’ll be doing a conference in the Columbus, Ohio area (Plain City to be exact) tonight.

First Baptist Church of Lowell graciously opened their doors to our conference. Just a few weeks earlier, they had a flood, and they spent the last several weeks doing repairs and getting things ready for the conference.

Our conference coordinator and other ladies from her homeschool group made us an incredible Mexican meal! There was a sumptuous spread of food, even including homemade salsa (which we’ve been missing since our garden didn’t produce many tomatoes this year). One interesting bit of trivia was watching Mrs. G cook and bare handedly flip the tortillas over the gas burner of the church’s stove, and she didn’t burn herself!

Hotel Hospitality and Friends

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Our family frequently stays in hotels while we travel. The hotel in Somerset, Kentucky, was the most friendly we have ever stayed in. The desk clerk helped us find where we needed to park the bus, let us use the hotel’s dryer when we asked how long the guest laundry dryers took to dry a load, voluntarily got a stack of extra towels when she heard the boys slept on the bus but came in to shower, offered for the boys to sleep on the sofas in the lobby if they were cold on the bus, and wanted us to practice our music in the breakfast room. She made us feel like we were at home.

There were three highlights of the Somerset conference for us. First, a friend of mine, whom I hadn’t seen for nine years, drove two hours to the conference with her husband and two of her sons. What a joy that was for me even though we had very little time to talk to each other. “A friend loveth at all times…” Proverbs 17:17

The second highlight was meeting a family who read about our family’s nursing-home church, and they have begun a church in an assisted-living home. They told us they now have such peace about their church and joy in it.

The third highlight was a man who came to Steve after the conference and talked for quite a while. Steve heard from him the next morning via e-mail, and he shared with Steve that his 51 inch beast (TV) was headed out of their home. “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes…” (Psalms 101:3) We regularly hear from families several months or years after a conference, and they tell us the impact the conference had on their family – changes the Lord Jesus was leading them to make. However, to have such immediate feedback involving that magnitude of change was a blessing to our hearts.

Speaking about conference feedback, we were just talking in the bus as we drove this morning about how many of our conferences this trip were coordinated by someone who had been to one of our conferences in the past. Seven out of the sixteen conferences on this trip fell into this category.

North Carolina’s Conference

Monday, October 13th, 2008

We wrapped up our sixth, out of seven, weekend conference, and what a blessing being in Shelby, North Carolina was! As we’ve found so far on our weekend conferences, many families drive from several hours away and stay at local hotels. The family who coordinated the conference came to our Winston-Salem conference two years ago.

This group was the most punctual, receptive group we’ve had so far :-) ! When I peeked into the room before the How to Start and Run Your Own Business session was to start, I was surprised to see several rows of young people ready :-) . Usually there is a light crowd right after lunch, and people filter in as the session is going.
