A Family Member Who Keeps Us Laughing

Friday, January 30th, 2009

As we were preparing to have our Bible time in the bus at our hotel here outside of Atlanta, John was coming up with acreative way to taking some health “stuff” without a cup. Since a few in our family have had colds, we’ve been trying some suggestions offered by others to help us stay healthy. One is Grapefruit Seed Extract, which is quite awful tasting, but we’ve found that taking it in orange juice helps mask the flavor. The other thing we’re trying is Emergen-C packets. John made himself a cup, and put the orange juice and grapeseed extract in it (if he had remembered, he would have put the Emergen-C in it as well!)

Savannah Report and on to Snellville (Atlanta Area)

We had a very blessed conference last night. After getting lost and driving back and forth on one road, we arrived safely at the church for setup. Our Google directions were not accurate so that was the reason for getting lost. The coordinator had provided a delicious supper. Thank you to all that helped. Also a special thanks to Libby and Lucy for their help on dinner! Our setup and pack up went very smoothly for which we were very grateful for. We are now on our way to Atlanta and are looking forward to the weekend conference.

Piling 01: The Pelican Pad

Friday, January 30th, 2009
From last week:
While crossing the Gandy Bridge across the Tampa Bay we enjoyed seeing all of the pelicans that were enjoying the warm sun on the bridge pilings.

While crossing the Gandy Bridge across the Tampa Bay we liked seeing all of the pelicans that were enjoying the warm sun on the bridge pilings.

We lived in Florida when I was quite young (from about the time I was one through the age of five), and I have a few memories from those years. One thing I do remember are the pelicans. Dad took Nathan and I fishing a few times, and we would generally be fishing from a pier. The water would be perhaps 15 or 20 feet below us. The pelicans liked to hang around fishermen, and one had to be careful when reeling in a fish that the pelicans didn’t fly by and grab the (hooked) fish!

In Christ,
Christopher

The first morning we were at the guest house Joseph saw and photographed this great heron.

A Conference Near the Shores of the Atlantic Ocean

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Our conference on Sullivan’s Island last night went well! Dad gave one new workshop on harnessing the power of a team. I know Dad put a lot of hours of preparation into it, and the session was very powerful. He shared about a yoke of oxen and how similar they are to a husband-wife relationship.

Dad used quite a few drawings of oxen (thanks, Abi!), in his session.

This is one of the slides in Dad’s new workshop “Harnessing the Power of a Team.”

Christopher also gave two new sessions for the young people. The first one stemmed out of his blog posts on ambassadors and how we, as servants of Jesus, are to live as ambassadors for Him. The next one was on the kings of Israel and Judah and what they would say to the youth living today. It is always a challenge to give a session for the first time, but Jesus blessed, and both Christopher and Dad did wonderfully well.

We arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday. We have a lot of memories from this area. A couple of years ago (note: a few people who have read this thought this meant currently we have the flu, but we don’t! :-) We still appreciate your prayers–the Lord has really protected us from illness this trip, only a few had some minor colds, but none of the older ones, and the ones who had the colds are doing great now.), after a weekend conference, most of the family came down with a stomach virus Saturday night. We were staying in the hotel we are currently in, and we had to be in Shreveport, Louisiana, two days later. With only three healthy (who later got it) ones to pack up, we left several hours later than planned, but the Lord blessed, and we were gratefully able to make it to the conference on time. However, the memories still linger of the miserable time we had!!

Here Jesse is helping by testing out the mikes.

Florida Osprey

Florida Osprey

The osprey is a bird of prey that primarily eats a diet of fish, and we saw a number of osprey near the guest house. This one was not very interested in posing for a picture! About a block from the guest house there was an active osprey nest.

And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes,
and birds of the air have nests;
but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.  (Luke 9:58)

From a distance, the osprey can look similar to a bald eagle; one significant difference is the dark stripe near the eyes.

Our hearts are again overwhelmed as we reflect back on this weekend’s conference. We are grateful to each family who took their precious time to attend. Thursday night, Dad spoke to a small leadership group and encouraged them in their roles and how the Lord would have them to fulfill that position.

Friday afternoon Joseph, John, Anna, Jesse, and Mary set up the sound system for the music. Dinner was provided by the homeschool group who hosted the conference before the evening began (thank you!).

The coordinator surprised me with a birthday cake Friday night! My birthday was earlier this week, and many people made it special through the last few weeks :-) .

We all enjoyed being able to share again with families through the hour of music and testimonies. The delight and joy on the faces of those listening is always a blessing.

Quite a few families drove several hours to be able to come, and we were honored that one couple came as a celebration for their 4th wedding anniversary! Many dads and moms talked to our Dad and Mom after each session, asking specific questions on how to apply the teaching and concepts to their own personal situations and challenges. The young people also interacted with us, and we had many good conversations.

Manatees, God’s Amazing Creation

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

What an incredible gift it was to see the manatees up close. The first group of us set out Wednesday morning, and we came upon some fishermen, who told us that the manatees were in that area. We stopped and watched, and were thrilled to see them come up to surface. We watched for a little while, before heading back. Mom stayed at the house, while Dad and Christopher joined us.

It was a beautiful

It was a beautiful, crisp Florida day.

The first sighting of a manatee was by Joseph right near our river house. I was upstairs trying to find Mom's cell phone, and I stepped out on the balcony, and they said they had seen one. It was a perfect view from where I was, and Dad brought me a camera. (The manatee is right under the light pole.)

Here we are at the manatee "hole", and we experienced the thrill of having them swim right next to you, or under you, which makes one a little nervous.

When Christopher told me there was a manatee close by, I don't think I realized just how close and how big this guy was!

Here comes one!

The First Conference Report

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

We had a great start to our conferences on this trip with a good group of families attending the Spring Hill, Florida evening conference. We have been praying about and discussing whether to continue doing two of our songs at the end of the evening because it usually pushes us a little past our preferred 9:30 ending time. The coordinator suggested we do the music because she felt it would be an encouragement to the young people in attendance. We were also treated to complimentary meals at Chick-Fil- A during our stay in Spring Hill, which we were able to take advantage of twice. Both times the food was delicious, and we all enjoyed it. “Eat mor chikin!”

Trusting in Jesus,
Teri (the manatee post is coming soon!)

A River House, Twirling, and Kayaks

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

This morning Steve and I had a most delightful walk together – twirling. That is our name for a walk where we can’t walk out to a destination and back but rather walk cul-de-sacs, dead ends, or hotel parking lots. Usually twirling walks are not our favorite kinds of walks, but this morning’s twirling walk was wonderful.

We have been blessed by being allowed to stay our three nights in the Spring Hill, Florida area, in the river house that belongs to a kind family who offered it for our use. This house is directly facing a river inlet near the Gulf, which is a great delight to our family from Kansas.

Right now most of the family is enjoying the kayaks provided for visitors’ use. I was happy to stay at the house to take photos of the kayakers and write a blog post. Our morning walk was up and down the little streets that line the fingers of the river inlet.

Although Steve spoke several times at the church in Arkansas, tonight is our first normal evening conference night. We are excited to be once again sharing what the Lord has put on our hearts with which to encourage other families.

A Weekend Visit and On to Florida

Monday, January 19th, 2009

We had a delightful weekend with Teri’s sister and her husband in Alabama. There was lots of time for talking, a daily walk, evening Bible time, meal preparation and delicious meals, plus a small home improvement project. We were very blessed that our trip brought us close enough to their house that we could leave on our trip early and stop to visit them. Plus we asked Grandma and Grandad’s permission to go early since they do the shipping while we are away and that makes more shipping days for them. Nathan and Melanie also agreed to take over our church for an extra Sunday so that we could see Uncle Rob and Aunt Tami.

Fellowship on the Road

Friday, January 16th, 2009

As we began this trip, we had the joy of meeting the Duggar family face to face. We have known them for several years because they have been using a MOTH schedule, and they tested chorepacks for us. In their new book, The Duggars: 20 and Counting! (after going to the link, you can click on a picture of the book), they mentioned how they use their schedule and chorepacks to facilitate the goals the Lord has given them for their large family. The Duggars were on the way to our first stop on our trip so we left early enough to join them for lunch and some time of fellowship. It was a sweet time for us as we interacted with their family.

The Duggars and The Maxwells

We spent the last two days fellowshipping and sharing at a church in central Arkansas. We are blessed by the believers we have met there as we challenge each other in the Lord and by their gracious hospitality to us. This is the second time we have been there, and we found a special delight in returning to an area we have already been. We were able to renew friendships, deepen relationships, and meet others we didn’t meet on our first visit.

Now we are on our way to Teri’s sister’s home near Huntsville, Alabama, where we will spend the weekend.

On the Road Again!

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

It was quite cold in Leavenworth this morning (6 degrees) as we loaded the final bags. Yesterday afternoon all of the books and everything else that goes with us :-) was packed so we didn’t have as much to load this morning.

Everyone pitched in yesterday to prepare for our trip. Each person fulfills an important role. From cleaning the bus, to getting the shipping area ready for Grandma and Grandad, to loading all the food items, to last minute packing (and wondering what COULD I be forgetting? or, as someone in the family mentioned this morning they felt they were taking their entire dresser!), to eating up the leftovers (Mom does a wonderful job on clearing out the fridge before each trip), to making the boys’ beds in the bus, and so much more.

Take a look at the time on the clock. Definitely needed Jesses attention!

Nathan and Melanie fed us a delicious dinner last night. They often do this the night before a trip so that we don’t have to prepare a meal. We know this was an extra special labor of love yesterday on Melanie’s part, because Abigail was quite fussy. We enjoyed a meal with the three of them, and then had our time in God’s Word, before getting back to trip preparations. We will definitely miss everyone at home, including Miss Abigail.

If Abigail could talk, I could imagine she would say she is going to miss us.

I didn’t get our traditional “send off” prayer picture, but I was able to get one of everyone waving good-bye to Grandad and Grandma.

We didn’t post an update on the funeral last week. The Lord’s hand was so evident in the service. The five younger children’s music went smoothly, and we were told it blessed many. Dad’s message was on Psalm 23, bringing in a salvation theme and the comfort we have in knowing that this separation is just temporary.

We are grateful for your prayers as we travel. This trip is a little unusual because our first conference isn’t until next Tuesday evening. We’ll be spending a few days with friends in Arkansas, and we’re hoping to stop for a few days at Aunt Tami’s before heading to Florida.

It had been a beautiful day, with temperatures in the 50s, when suddenly the weather turned cold. Just in time for Uriah’s needed waxing! Hmmmm…

Regardless of the temperatures, the five younger children set to work washing the front of Uriah.

Have you seen another use for a blower? It’s a “bus dryer.” They needed to dry off the bus so that they could apply the wax. I believe we’re going to experience quite the temperature change from Kansas to Florida!

A Temporary Goodbye and Our Upcoming Trip

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Life is pretty fast-paced around the Maxwell home with several different factors: bus work, trip preparations, house things, and a funeral to prepare for. Saturday night, one of our dear friends from the nursing home, left his earthly body and joyfully met his Savior face to face. With our nursing home ministry comes the reality of facing death often. It is never easy to say good-bye, even though it is temporary, to our friends. Daddy has the privilege of being able to do our friend’s entire funeral service. The children have been asked to do the music, so they’re working to prepare the songs requested. We would greatly appreciate prayer if you think of us the next two days, as preparations are made. Thursday morning is the funeral.

We are leaving on our 3 week trip next Tuesday—which is all too quickly approaching. The boys put down a new insulated floor in the bus. It makes the whole bus feel fresh and clean and hopefully it will be warmer! It’s another exciting start to the conversion process.

In the meantime, school is still busily being done, two birthdays are being celebrated early, and the list goes on.

May we each keep in mind how close eternity is and never take another day for granted.
