Pictures from this morning

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

It was an unexpected blessing to be taken to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum today! The pastor of the church we spoke at last night and another person provided passes for our entire family.

The family as they looked at President Reagan's burial place.

It was a rainy morning, but the view was still gorgeous. On clear days, we're told, you can see islands out in the ocean!

Thank you, Pastor, for taking us up to the museum and providing the passes! We were blessed by our time of fellowship with you all.

The museum was so well done; it was amazing.

A family picture (need to have one of those!).

Christopher had brought Million Dollar bills with Ronald Reagan's picture on them; one staff member requested another one to give to someone! Then, he began handing some out to a few children, and soon a whole group had gathered around him.

We girls enjoyed seeing the table settings at the White House.

Thank you for praying for the pass condition on I-5 and us getting up to Sacramento tomorrow (see two posts below)…

A big “thank you” to Anna for picking out all the pictures!

Last Night

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

It was a joy to share with a local church body last night through music, testimony, and preaching because of a last-minute invitation! Here are a few pictures from the evening.

I love to hear Dad preach, and last night was no exception as he spoke on Elijah.

We are looking forward to two more church services that came about since we began our trip plus the ones that were already scheduled. A church contacted us in southern Oregon for next Wednesday, and a pastor from southern Washington called about the next Sunday evening.

“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach” (Romans 10:8).

One More Opportunity

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

… for the Lord to show Himself mighty! We became aware this morning that the portion of I-5 that we need to go on to head up to Sacramento tomorrow is closed due to heavy snowfall, and there’s no word as to when it might open.

We’ll be doing our Burbank (Los Angeles) conference tonight, and we’re considering our route options. Whatever it is, we’re resting in the Lord to direct us in how we should make it to Sacramento. Please pray: that Dad will have a clear direction for how we are to make it.

We know the weather is in HIS control– so here we are on another adventure. This trip has been full of them!

A report soon on last night AND this morning’s unexpected visit to Ronald Reagan’s Library!

Thank you for praying!

The Sequence of “The Change of Plans”

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

Here’s a “Maxwell” plans, but the “Lord directs” sequence.

  • Start trip with plan for Flagstaff, AZ, conference Monday night; Burbank, CA, conference Thursday.
  • Friday morning, we decide to make lunch plans for Tuesday after Flagstaff with Uncle Roy and Aunt Phyllis, who are in Sun City for the winter. From there, we would drive to Joshua Tree National Park and hike on Wednesday before going to Burbank on Thursday.
  • Saturday morning, Flagstaff conference rescheduled due to a snow storm. Rain is predicted for the entire Arizona/California area, so we decide not to go to the park because it’s going to rain.
  • We have thoughts of just staying put in Tucson until Wednesday or so, and then heading on to Burbank.
  • Decide that’s not a good idea due to all the rain and needing to get to Burbank in case there’s flooding that would hinder travel. We begin our drive after church on Sunday night. It doesn’t work out to meet Uncle Roy and Aunt Phyllis Monday morning when we are in Phoenix.
  • On our way to Burbank on Monday, the wind is picking up, and as we near the exit for the park, Dad thinks we might stay the night there, avoid the high wind predicted in L.A., and maybe hike a bit since it’s not raining.
  • We enjoy a great family hike, despite the wind, and our first “real” camping experience with Uriah. (Dad’s becoming quite the expert handler of Uriah in tight spots!) Dad decides we’ll stay at the park two nights, and leave for Burbank Wednesday sometime.
  • We drive out of the park Tuesday morning, so Christopher and I can get some things done on the internet (as well as a few blog posts uploaded), because there’s no cell phone signal up at the park, but 10 miles from the campground at the edge of the park there was. As we’re working on the internet/e-mail, Joseph thinks we have a major problem with the black tank (would have been a huge issue), but we find we don’t.
  • Go back to the park, and while we’re filling up with water, John announces we have a real problem in the fresh water tank! Water is everywhere.
  • Decide we can’t go hiking: we have a bigger issue–no fresh water. We see that all we need is a small part: praise the Lord! So, on to the closest Camping World, which will have the part.
  • We then plan on parking at our coordinator’s house in L.A. until our conference Thursday.
  • Then, as we have Internet access again, we receive an e-mail requesting we speak at a church in Simi Valley Wednesday evening. Dad agrees (happily), and then it’s decided to drive to the church and stay overnight, since they have a plug-in for the bus so we don’t need to run the generator.
  • Wake up Wednesday morning and discover that this area is expecting torrential rain and wind up to 60 mph. We are grateful to be here and not have Dad driving in the wind and rain.
  • That’s where it stands right now.  The Lord gave us a Wednesday evening service, and it’s been a wonderful, exciting several days!
  • We make the plans, but the Lord directs our steps. What a joy to rest in a faithful Savior! — Sarah

“…a woman that feareth the LORD,
she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Joshua Tree National Park

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

On Sunday night after the church service where Dad preached and we did some music, we drove a little over two hours to Phoenix for the night. The Flagstaff conference for Monday night had been postponed until February 15th because of a snowstorm. That weather system was also predicted to bring rain to much of California all week. On Monday morning, we started towards Burbank, California (Los Angeles area), where our Thursday night conference will be held. Because we had originally had two open nights before our Thursday conference, we had planned to stop at the Joshua Tree National Park for a day since it was directly on our travel route, but those plans had been overturned after seeing the predictions for inclement weather.

Then plans changed – again. We saw signs for the Joshua Tree National Park, and it wasn’t raining. Because the wind had gotten very strong, Dad thought we could possibly stay a night or two in a campground there and see if the wind would die down enough for a safer drive later in the week. Another check to the weather website and it showed that there was the potential that the wind would settle down by Wednesday.

There is a campground in the park where we are staying. We are thoroughly enjoying the beautiful view from our location, and Dad is grateful not to have to drive in the wind. We were able to take a three-mile hike before the rain clouds turned us home to our bus. It is strange to watch it rain in the desert. But it reminds me of what we are supposed to be – rain in a spiritually dry land.

A Blessed Day of Worship

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Sunday morning we enjoyed fellowship with the small body of believers with whom our conference coordinator worships. We were warmly welcomed at the church and fed the Word of God during the message.

That evening we had been invited to another church for Steve preach the message and our family to do some music. They planned a Mexican food potluck before the service, which allowed us some extra fellowship time. Many of the families at the church had been to our Tucson conference two years ago and then to this one as well. When we left that evening, we felt we had many new friends in Christ. As we pulled out to head for Phoenix, lots of the children and some of the parents gathered outside the front door to send us off. As they waited for us to leave, the children sang, Jesus Loves Me, for us.

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, 5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.” Philippians 1:3-5

The Christ-Led Family in Tucson

Monday, January 18th, 2010

This was our first time to give a new conference that we have been working on very hard. After many hours invested in preparing for each session, we were excited to finally be to the conference weekend.

Friday night had an hour and a half of music and testimonies by each of us. It’s a joy to watch the faces of those listening and see the delight on the little children’s faces.

Friday afternoon during set up.

Jesse and Anna working on sound.

Dad had prepared a new men’s session that correlates with his latest book Redeeming the Time, while Mom had a new ladies’ session where she goes through the encouragement she shares with those who come to her with problems. Dad also gave sessions on being a Christ-led Family, being a Christ-led Leader, and Harnessing the Power of a Team. Together Dad and Mom gave a session about anger. Plus Mom dealt with the practical aspects of being a Christ-led woman in daily life.

Christopher had a session for the young people and children teaching them how to share the gospel and use balloons to interest people. The rest of us children were going to help pump balloons. As we observed child after child walking into that session, we knew it was going to be an interesting proposition to pump up enough balloons! I wish you could have heard the excitement when we walked into the room about 9:30 a.m. carrying all those balloons. Christopher thought everyone was attentive during the first part of the session because they knew the balloons were coming!

Christopher, Joseph, John, and Jesse gave a session called Spending Time Productively; and I heard it went very well! Anna, Mary, and I gave one called Keepers at Home. I loved working with my sisters and seeing the responsiveness of the girls attending the session.

I believe the last sessions of the day were some of the most powerful. At the same time Dad was speaking to couples, John and Anna were giving Dwelling Together in Unity to the children, and it was also an incredible session! For those coming to Sacramento, Vancouver, BC, and Fallbrook, we’ve decided to add the Unity session in our schedule. From my view in the back of Dad’s session for husbands and wives, couples appeared to be listening intently and soaking in the information.

We were very grateful for the positive feedback we received concerning the conference because it confirmed the direction the Lord has placed on our hearts for this conference. We will have this conference available to give in places where we have already given our Encouragement for the Homeschool Family conference.

Our coordinator, Mrs. F., was amazing and very kind to our family.

Thank you again to those who were praying for us! It is our heart’s desire that there was lasting spiritual fruit from the weekend.

PS-For those who may be wondering, we’re heading on to L.A. today, and because of the big rain system, I think we’re going to be hearing rain, rain, and more rain on good ole’ Uriah’s roof for the next few days! :-)

“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him” (Psalms 34:7-8).

For Abigail…

Monday, January 18th, 2010

While getting some groceries we noticed a gentleman with his dog in the parking lot. Knowing that Abigail likes dogs, I thought it would be neat to get a photo, with the dog, for Abigail.

Uncle Christopher with a tired-out, but happy, dog.

Turns out the dog is from Omaha and on a bit of a cross-country vacation to get away from the cold. Considering the type of dog and the dog’s name, I could have titled this entry, “A Pit Bull Named Maniac”! Even though the dog is 9 years old, it is generally full of puppy energy; however, he had just had his first visit to a dog park, and after running around for quite some time was tired.

Tucson Sights…

Beautiful mountains just outside of Tucson, Arizona.

“As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.” (Psalms 125:2)

We saw a number of fighter jets from the nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on training flights, and were grateful for the peace that God has given this land. At the same time may we remember to pray for those in our Armed Forces, especially those who are in harm's way.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you…”  (John 14:27)

Flagstaff Rescheduled Due to a Winter Storm

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

A change of plans for Monday :-) . A winter storm is predicted for Flagstaff, with 6″-12″ of snow to fall Monday, which was when our conference was scheduled.

It was decided to re-schedule for February 15th, on our way back Fallbrook, California. So, for those of you who were going to attend Flagstaff, it’s been postponed to February 15th. Here’s a link to the updated conference page.

Quick preview from the weekend

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I almost don’t know where to start, but I’ll be doing the “real” report tomorrow or Monday. The Christ-Led Family Conference went above and beyond what we were expecting. We have started giving it in cities that we’ve already given our normal Encouragement for the Homeschool Family conference. The response was amazing.

Thank you for praying–truly! We heard from a friend today that their family had a special prayer time just for us. Thank you all.

We will be attending church tomorrow with another family, and then we’ll be doing the Sunday evening service at another church. Please pray that our family will be used of the Lord as we share.

Thank You … For Praying

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

We are very grateful. Please pray especially for Dad as he’ll be speaking from 9 until 4 (with a lunch break :-) ). The rest of us don’t have as an intensive of a schedule, but we truly need the Lord’s strength and words to flow through each of us.

The family tonight...

Anna looks like she has some little friends.

Prayer for this weekend

Friday, January 15th, 2010

We’re excited as the Tucson Christ-Led Family conference is almost upon us. We would be very grateful for your prayers this weekend, since we are giving many new sessions. It’s also exciting as the youngest five Maxwells (now ages 13-20!), will be giving several sessions. Tonight will be an hour and a half of music and testimony, and then we’ll have a very full day tomorrow.

New sessions!

The weather is stunningly beautiful, and the rugged mountains surrounding the city, add another reminder of God’s creation.

In the land of catcus...Mom loves the catcus, and there’s plenty around here!

The Lord has so blessed, and we continue to look forward to His working on this trip.

Adventures in Cooking

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

This trip we have enjoyed experimenting with cooking. To cook, we are furnished with a crock pot, electric fry pan, and a single-burner hotplate. First Mom cooked refrigerated biscuits in the electric fry pan, and that has lead us to think of more things we might be able to make in the fry pan that we normally cook in the oven. The other day Jesse made us pigs in blankets (hotdogs with biscuits wrapped around them). Joseph tried his hand at grilled cheese sandwiches, which we usually cook in the electric fry pan.

I  had the idea of making chocolate chip cookies in the fry pan so we bought some refrigerated cookie dough. Because of using the electric fry pan, I had to flip the cookies after one side had cooked to get the other side done as well! These cookies were voted better as dough – if you get what the family politely thought of the cooked cookies. Nevertheless, we are working at trying out different things in our crock pot and electric fry pan! Last night for John’s birthday dinner, we had chili cheese dip made in the crockpot served with tortilla chips. Another day we made boxed au gratin potatoes in the crockpot.

Joseph makes great grilled cheese sandwiches.

Las Cruces

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Yesterday was a restful day in the bus. We got school, work, cleaning, exercise, cooking, and shopping done! Setup came and went smoothly which included a break to video chat with Abigail and Melanie!

The conference last night in Las Cruces went well. It seems at each conference people respond to the message in different ways and it was very encouraging to see the youth with open hearts and attentive spirits at this one.

Jesse is the "door man" and shows people where to go at the conference.

The True West

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

We’re on our way to Tucson, and it’s simply beautiful this morning. Mountains are on both sides, and the road stretches straight in front of us. The fields are full of Joshua trees, scrub, and sand. It’s easy driving for Dad because there is no wind–a wonderful blessing.

Anna will be reporting on Las Cruces sometime today!

White Sands

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Yesterday we were privileged to visit White Sands! On our drive out, it was hard to believe that there really was white sand out there, because all we were seeing was desert and mountains! It wasn’t until shortly before the park entrance that some sand dunes started appearing. It was fascinating how God provided such a large area of gypsum/sand dunes there.

The Lord blessed us with gorgeous weather! With temperatures in the fifties and sunny, it was a perfect day. As we set out across the sand, it was an amazing experience to see the white “powder” stretching into the horizon. We enjoyed a day filled with climbing the dunes, taking pictures, enjoying the scenery, sledding, and walking. Mom, our memory maker, was very successful at this memory, and it is irreplaceable. Seeing and touching God’s creation in such a great expanse was so unique and amazing.

Here is a little glimpse into our time!

Your Heavenly Father Feedeth Them

Monday, January 11th, 2010

We had to make another run to Wal-Mart this morning, so some went in while some waited in the bus. As we were preparing to leave for White Sands, we saw an elderly lady, who appeared to not have much, out feeding the pigeons and black birds. It was such a precious sight to see her, being an “instrument” used of the Lord, to feed His creatures.

A Taste Away from Home: Snickerdoodles

Monday, January 11th, 2010

This is not just an ordinary Snickerdoodle! These cookies were given to us for trip-snacking the night before we left. We greatly enjoyed them, and we think you will as well.

Snickerdoodles
from the R. Family

2 3/4 cups flour (half whole wheat/half white flour)
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup softened unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla

Topping
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Pre-heat oven to 400. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder in sifter. In mixer, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs on at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Add flour mixture to mixer, beat just until incorporated. Shape dough into balls and roll entire thing in cinnamon sugar topping. *If dough is too soft to form balls, cover and refrigerate until firm enough to form balls. Bake 8-10 minutes.

Pictures from our traveling day last week down through Texas….

The sun came out for a little while and the sky was blue. We were driving through a massive wind-turbine farm (hundreds, if not thousands of wind-turbines) I finally decided to put down my laptop and try and take a few pictures. As I picked up the camera a train was next to the bus and the train became the focus, not the wind-turbines.

Looking into Another Country

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

After we visited Mom’s childhood places, we headed out of town. As we drove, we saw the flag of Mexico flying not too far from the interstate. Going along the interstate, we were amazed to see that Mexico was literally just right next to us–it was so clear by the stark contrast. The border was seen clearly by a large fence stretching for a long distance. We saw small, humble dwellings scattered across the hill, dirt roads, and more: showing the poverty that many live in.

May we never take for granted anything that we have. So many have so little. Speaking of another country, let’s look forward to our Heavenly Country!

“For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. . .  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city” (Hebrews 11:14, 15).

We are now in Las Cruces, parked for the night.

El Paso

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

We made a semi-quick trip to WalMart early Friday afternoon to purchase some items, and then after lunch, family Bible time, and miscellaneous things, set up was begun. For the most part, set up went quite smoothly, which is a little unusual since the first set up of the trip tends to not be so easy. By the end, we’re all experienced :-) .
