ENOCH NJ Homeschool Convention

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Friday morning found John, Joseph, and Jesse helping vendors in the vendor hall; we were already set up, but many vendors still needed to prepare their booths. What were the boys doing?! Everything from  helping drivers with limited reverse operational experience with trailers pull into the hall with no mishaps to unloading boxes and other tasks. The guys really enjoyed their time!

By 2 p.m., everything was in order and ready for the homeschool families to peruse the vendor hall.

The Lord used each of Dad and Mom’s sessions to speak to parents. Often, we children had great conversations with parents at our book tables as they asked us questions about how we were raised.

Families gained new vision as they heard how to raise sons who could provide for their families, how it was possible to be a family team, how the mom could effectively homeschool multiple children, how to have daily, family Bible time, and how they could have children who would love and serve the Lord Jesus.

A neat “side bonus” this convention offered was free admission to parents of preschoolers (the oldest had to be 5 or less), and it was great seeing many young families contemplating homeschooling, while soaking in the information.

The ENOCH convention staff was very gracious and hospitable to us, providing multiple meals for the family throughout the weekend.

It was a joy to be able to share with the homeschoolers of New Jersey.

John, Jesse, and Joseph volunteered in the vendor hall.

Right before the convention opened, we discovered our electricity didn't work. It ended up they had to get out the forklift to rewire things (see the background).

Quack Quack

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Abigail really likes ducks (and geese). We thought of her when we saw a family of geese at the New Jersey convention parking lot!

A family of geese, spotted in the parking lot at the New Jersey convention.

The family of geese were waddling across the parking lot. One little guy was lagging behind a bit.

The reason he was lagging behind? He had an itch. And every now and then he stopped to scratch. I missed the ideal moment on the scratch, but was close.

As they crossed a grassy area the goslings became excited.

They ran ahead because they saw a puddle of water.

They had caught sight of a puddle...

They all took drinks and some even got into the puddle for a swim.

They all took drinks, and some even got in the water for a little swim.

At one point, Dad was moving the bus from the loading area to the parking area and crossed behind the geese.

After the swim was finished they got out of the water to look for bugs in the grass. Dad was moving Uriah from the loading area to the parking area at that time.

After they were done in the water they walked back across the parking lot. Some little boys tried to chase them but wisely stopped right before being charged by big geese.

After a few minutes they waddled back across the parking lot. Some young boys came out to chase them, but wisely stopped moments before the parent geese charged them. The geese then went off into the trees where there were some waterways.

Another Full Day

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

It’s 11:30 p.m., so I don’t have time for a full report, but we just finished another full day. We will be posting on the convention (complete with pictures!) soon, plus today’s events.

What are we doing the next two days? We’re headed to Wisconsin for the convention, so we’ll be driving many miles over the next two days, so we would appreciate prayer as we drive.

More later–truly! :-)

A Preview

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

It’s been a blessed weekend, but we’re tired, so just two pictures before we’re able to do a full post. Please pray for us tomorrow, as we’ll be doing an afternoon/evening of sharing in Rocky Ridge, Maryland. We are stopped for the night in PA, and we have about a three hour drive in the morning.

Blessings,
Sarah

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

The first day of the convention went great–the Lord so blessed, and we are excited about today. A real report will follow at some point, not sure exactly when, but thank you for praying–please continue to do so!

Sarah

“Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing” (Psalms 100:2).

Setup

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The exhibit hall

It was a beautiful day to haul books inside for set up. Walking in, it definitely  looked like a convention hall: the standard multi-color drapery, aisles of booths, etc. Ah, the familiar feeling of a convention!

Christopher and Jesse bringing in a dolly load of books.

The decorating company let us use their flat-bed dolly to bring books in, making it much faster than our regular hand truck.

Communication - a key to success! Cell phones come in handy when unloading.

Books were quickly placed in order - surprisingly fast, because usually our first setup for trip is harder than normal.

Bringing in a load!

Mary settin' up!

Anna, opening boxes!

We have a white board that we can use for writing what session is Dad and Mom are giving next, and Joseph was lending his artistic talent to spruce up the board.

There's always time for a little bus maintenance!

In front of the convention center.

We’re in prayer for the conference today (starts at 2) and tomorrow. Thank you for standing with us in prayer.

Sarah for the rest

“From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16).

Unplanned stop!

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Yesterday we were driving down the Pennsylvania 33, and we noticed a sign for the Martin Guitar Company at the next exit. Dad decided we had enough time to be able to stop for a few minutes! Joseph was especially happy, because he plays the guitar. We didn’t think we’d ever be near enough to the Martin Guitar Company to stop or have the time if we were close, but the Lord blessed with the surprise visit. We had no idea that we would be driving right by it! We enjoyed a quick visit, and then we headed back down the road and reached the convention in the early afternoon.

Playing some of the instruments.

Some of us walked through the museum. This was what J.F. Martin's workshop looked like.

In Christ,
Anna

“Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.” (Psalm 135:3)

Another Driving Day

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Our driving day went well yesterday–it was mostly overcast, but we stayed ahead of the storm. A little after 4, we thought we’d stop for the night so we had time for exercise/dinner/Bible time/projects. It was a rather full, small Wal-Mart parking lot, and Dad decided we’d move on around 6:30. So, we drove another hour, and this time we came to a scenic Wal-Mart on the top of the hill with a pretty view (very nice, a room with a view).

We had a good night’s rest, and we were off around 8. Set up for the convention will be this afternoon, and we’re looking forward to what the Lord has in store this weekend at the ENOCH convention!

Sarah

One thing we noticed in parts of Ohio and then into Pennsylvania, was spring was just starting! See the brown clearly visible in the trees?

Anna made us a delicious beef stroganoff with rice for dinner. It smelled good all afternoon!

We saw a man walking his German Shepherd in the first W-M parking lot, and after chatting, we found out he had three. Here's John with the mama dog: she's due in about 6 days! Abby, you'll enjoy this picture!

“Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope” (Acts 2:26).

A Temporary Leak

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Our driving day yesterday was beautiful: sunny, blue skies with cool temperatures. Most of us took naps in the afternoon, and with the cool breeze blowing through the bus, the rest was wonderful.

Late in the afternoon, John discovered the floor next to Dad and Mom’s bed was rather damp, not a good sign seeing we had just installed a new water tank under their bed! It was decided that a connection hadn’t been crimped, so, we needed to find a — you guessed it — Lowe’s. If you were to remember on our last trip, where did we have to stop our first night?! Lowe’s! Anyway, the problem is fixed, and a little time and wind will dry the carpet, so no big deal.

We had a delicious stew. Yumm.

We settled at Home Sweet Home (aka Wal-Mart) in Terre Haute, Indiana. We left a little before 7 this morning, due to trying to stay ahead of a storm. Our plan was to make it to Washington, Pennsylvania tonight, but with an early start, we’ll likely go further.

Thank you for praying!

Sarah

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God” (Psalms 42:1).

New Jersey Bound!

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

It was a team effort, requiring all nine of us, to be able to finish all the details of leaving. As Anna mentioned, it seemed we were forgetting things, but we hope not. If we did, oh well. We’re on our way, and we’re not turning back.

So, what’s a departure morning like?

  • It was normal wake up time, before 5 for half the family, and 5:15 for the rest.
  • Then, individual time in God’s Word — a very special part of our morning.

  • Anna made pancakes for breakfast, and others hurried around, carrying their belongings out to the bus or finishing up other details.
  • Last minute loading was done, such as instruments and other items.

Loadin' up!

  • The departure time was tentatively set for 9, but we had no huge deadline, except for wanting to be past St. Louis before rush hour.
  • John did some maintenance on the bus, and then he had a quick 8:30 business appointment.
  • Joseph and Jesse did the rest of the bus loading.

Where's John?! Doing a bit of maintenance.

Mom does such a good job with all of the myriad of things to pack.

Washing the car!

  • After all the essentials were done for some people,  there was time for extras such as washing a car and cleaning!

Praying before we left.

  • Finally, around 10:30, we prayed and just as we were pulling out, someone realized they had forgotten their pillows, so they hurried back in.
  • We were expecting a package to come via UPS, and we were going to try to meet the UPS man, but it didn’t seem to work out, until we drove by Wal-Mart and saw his truck. Long story short (it ended up not to be our driver we saw, but he came shortly thereafter), we were able to meet him and get the package needed. It might seem insignificant, but we DO need shopping bags at the conferences. You can’t send people away from the book tables with books and no bag!

We would be so grateful for your prayers as we travel about 1500 miles to Edison, New Jersey over the next two days. This trip will involve a lot of driving :-) — a total of 5000 miles.

We’ll be keeping ya’ll updated!

Sarah

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalms 91:11).

Almost blast off!

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Today was a rainy, drippy day, and we were very glad that the books were loaded on Saturday! There were many things that were accomplished today, but yet we still have the feeling that we are forgetting something. Maybe that’s just because this is a three week trip instead of a six week trip?? Tomorrow, Lord willing, is our departure day.

We are looking forward to this weekends conference in New Jersey, and are excited to be able to be on the road again.

There are always so many different projects to get done before leaving.

Nathan and Melanie had us over for dinner tonight. We greatly enjoyed our time with them, and we will miss them while we're gone.

In Christ,
Anna

“Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.” (Psalms 32:11)

Many hands make light work! (Saturday)

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

We had an exciting day of progress! There is another family that has been attending our church at the nursing home, and we were so blessed by their help today. They carried many boxes, and it truly made our work light! One of the things accomplished was moving the shipping supplies over to our friends’ house who will be shipping for us while we are gone! We also got much of the bus loaded! We had been planning on loading Monday, but because they are calling for rain it was decided to load today.

Mom does a great job with all of her lists! It makes packing so much easier.

Loading up...

...and then unloading!

Now it's time to load the bus!

John does a great job at packing in as many boxes as possible!

Thursday Joseph and Dad cut a big hole in the roof of our bus! They then installed a fan in the roof that will be able to keep air moving in the bus when we don’t have the air conditioning on. They did a great job at installing it, and we’re excited to be able to use it.

See Joseph on top of the bus? He is in the process of cutting the hole in the roof!

We would appreciate your prayers as we keep packing and preparing to leave!

In Christ,
Anna

Happy Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Today is a special day, and all of us Maxwell children are very grateful for our mom. What an incredible blessing she is to us!

Here are some little known facts and special things about Mom:

  • She got married on her 19th birthday.
  • She moved around many times in her childhood, since Grandad was in the military.
  • She almost was fatherless, as Grandad was wounded in Vietnam.
  • When I (Sarah) was a preschooler, she was excited that all three of us would be in school soon, and she dreaded summers. It was about that time, the Lord laid it on their hearts to homeschool :-) .
  • Been homeschooling ever since!
  • Mom loves family times: her favorite activity is hiking in the woods surrounded by her family.

”Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10).

Last tank in!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Progress! Praise the Lord. The last tank was carefully lifted into place Monday night, actually two times to be exact.

First time in!

Second time around. Okay, the tank isn't quite as heavy as it might seem, but it does weigh 150 pounds empty!

The last tank was another tight squeeze--it had to fit perfectly.

The big test--could the bay door close and not hit any of the plumbing?! It passed.

John working.

Yes, other trip preparations are under way...

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).

Happy Birthday, Christopher!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

We love you!

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).

Thank You and Another Request

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Thank you to all the ladies who sent their testimonies of how the Lord has worked in their hearts about staying at home. We are praying that the Learning to Be Keepers at Home workshop for girls by we Maxwell girls would work mightily in many young women’s hearts.

I was now wondering if the moms who have been stay-at-home moms from the beginning could share testimonies with me concerning how they have benefitted by staying home. I would be interested in the testimonies including the little treasures that you have found in daily life at home, why you enjoy being home, and perhaps three things (or more if you want : )) you would say to a young lady about how she can prepare for her life ahead of her. Do you regret not having a career outside the home?

We cannot express our gratitude for your helping us with this. As I am working on refining this workshop, I am excited by how the testimonies I have and the ones you might give me will bring life and validation to the structure of the workshop. May the Lord bless you as you invest in the lives of others.

Eight Days and Counting

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Now it can be said we’re leaving next week, and there is much to prepare! The guys have been diligently working on the bus, hoping to get the plumbing set, and all the tanks put back in. There have been many logistical discussions about all the details as Dad and Joseph planned the plumbing and tank layout, but it’s coming together nicely. Plus, we will have an extra tank of water this time, which will allow us to go about five days (being careful) between water fill ups. What a blessing!

In the meantime, Mary has been busy sewing. Bless her heart: she ended up needing to sew all four of the jumpers, because Anna and I didn’t have time. Anna has been planning out meals for the trip, making lists, and preparing them! You can tell we enjoy sampling what she cooks, when there is a note (from Mom) on the counter which requests that no more sampling be made :-) .

Please be in prayer with us for this trip, that our hearts would be prepared to share, and that the Lord would bring the people He wants to the convention. Our first stop will be the ENOCH convention in Edison, NJ, May 14th and 15th.

Sarah

Joseph and Dad have been working in some tight places!

The tanks are heavy, and again, being in a tight place, you can't move it around easily. After one tank was in, they had to pull out some things that had helped them put it in.

Dad was able to reach it while Joseph lifted up the tank.

Doing Mary's hem.

Each jumper (after it's cut out) takes Mary about five hours to make! She has made the pattern enough times recently that she's getting faster, as it's not a "2 hour" type of pattern.

Good job, Annie!

Quite a plumbing project!

Dad and John built a frame to put one of the tanks on, and here Dad was preparing to weld it.
