To Care or Not to Care

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

On occasion we receive a comment to a post that we might not approve for one reason or another. This one we felt was worthy of its own separate post. It was posted under this earlier post.

“I have to admit I find it condescending of you to pray for the waitresses salvation. Did you ask her if she was a Christian? If she is a Christian, she already has salvation so for you to pray for it sounds like you believe you have a ‘better line’ to God than she does.” a blog reader

Quite a few years ago an interstate bridge collapsed near St. Petersburg, Florida. Many cars drove over the top and down into the bay, killing those on board. If only someone would have been able to warn those drivers earlier. But what if the person willing to warn those driving toward the bridge had thought, “They might be insulted if I try to stop them, because maybe they are already aware that the bridge is out and are just going up there to look at the damage.” I’m confident everyone of those people who lost their lives that day would have been grateful if someone had cared enough to try to intervene. Which is worse, quick physical death or eternity in hell?

It is my experience that someone who is truly saved appreciates others who are concerned about their soul. Others who are lost and then become saved are grateful to those who cared and did something to help them avoid eternity in hell.

I expect if we had asked our waitress if she was a Christian, some might criticize us for that. You can’t make everyone happy. We have found that every time we ask a waiter or waitress how we can pray for them that they are grateful we love them enough to actually pray. You might try it. It’s a blessing for all involved.

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28

A Peek Into Our Sunday Morning Service

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

We served communion this morning, and before the service, Leah helped with preparing the cups (Thanks, Leah, and do you remember how it was hard to get the juice out? Well, I guess I had a “Sarah” moment. When I cleaned it out when I got home, I saw the straw was not in the bottle–that’s why we had a harder time!).

Singing time (and Abby/Mommy time).

We have some special song books designed for nursing home, so they have a larger print then normal. We generally sing through the hymnbook in order, since it’s not a thick book, it takes us a few months to go through it completely. But, today, we opted for some Christmas songs.

Daddy and “B” time–Bethany has acid reflux, so she does best being held upright and often walking helps too.

After singing several hymns, we move on to prayer time. Today, John leads it.

A special music, by most of the young people in our church.

Christopher preached, and then we had communion.

Mrs. B. and Leah.

Leah sits next to Mrs. B. (a widow, her husband used to live at the nursing home) every Sunday, which just delights Mrs. B’s heart.

We will greatly miss the R. family, who will be moving to another city this week. We have been so blessed by them this past year–I’ll never forget receiving an e-mail from them, inquiring about church, last December. They came for the first time on Christmas Day, and we’ve been enjoying them ever since. We’ll miss ya’ll. They were also the family who set up Live Stream for our nursing home friends on wedding day.

Some Pictures

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving: the day passed quickly with projects and Anna and Mary decorated the house for Christmas. Late afternoon, we ate a traditional dinner, and then we had a special time in God’s Word together.

We have so much to be grateful for–it is truly amazing how much the Lord Jesus has blessed each one of us with. May we express our gratefulness to HIM and to those we are around on a day-to-day basis.

Blessings,
Sarah
P.S. – Thank you for continuing to pray for the book project–the Lord is really blessing!

Joseph and John surprised us with a ham this year, and I think the general consensus was ham is way better than turkey! The boys also spruced up the ham, using an injector.

Thank You

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Thank you all for your prayers as I’ve embarked on the journey of the next Moody book. It now feels “real”! After so much time spent on the outline, it’s thrilling to actually write. One particular family (ya’ll know who you are :-) ), helped me with tons of information for a section of the book that I’ve not actually experienced before. They made it all so clear, I can’t wait to write that section tomorrow. Dad and I also are going on a morning trip somewhere next week for another chapter in the book. I’ve truly felt the prayers, and I’m grateful for the enthusiasm too.

Thank you!

Sarah

“We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth” (2 Thessalonians 1:3).

Three and Three

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

While we were waiting for all the extended relatives to arrive, we took our family pictures. Then, it was chilly enough, Dad and Mom went back to the van to warm up, and the six of us did photos together.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalms 133:1).

Autumn Days

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

With Sarah’s book outline completed, she is looking forward to the writing process, beginning Monday morning. She would greatly covet your prayers as she embarks on the actual book writing process. Her desire for each book is that it is to be exactly what the Lord Jesus wants. Dad has encouraged her to use the bus for a place to write, and she’s been enjoying the quiet and solitude it affords. She’s even been decorating the bus for Christmas and has a heater running often: it’s a cozy little place.

Thank you for praying!

Last Friday, working on her book outline.

Family Picture #1

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

We’ll do a mixture of pictures, but the one below is the new immediate Maxwell family. We’re an even 3 girls and 3 boys for us children. Yes, this is our standard pose, but be on the look out! We have some other ones coming.

“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done” (Psalms 78:4).

Titus2 Shipping

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Have you ever wondered who ships out Titus2.com orders when we’re on the road? It’s been an amazing journey. For a number of years, before the Lord gave Nathan and Melanie little ones, Melanie shipped for us. We were so grateful. Then, in September of 2008, my grandparents graciously agreed to ship for us, and they truly loved it. It was a joy for my grandma to pack the order and pray over each one as she shipped it. As most of you know, my grandparents were involved in a car accident last June. We had an upcoming trip, and we were going to figure out how to ship on the road, when my grandma was very emphatic that she still wanted to. So, with a bit of help from Melanie, she somehow managed to ship during those 5 weeks we were gone. Grandma and Grandad, THANK YOU for your enthusiasm and serving in this way.

After that, we all agreed it was too much for my grandma with her health status, and we began praying. Should we begin to pull a trailer behind the bus and ship on the road? What were we to do? The Lord prompted my dad to contact another family who lives near us to see if their girls would be willing to ship from their home. Their answer? YES!

So, since January of this year, the sweet C. family has been graciously shipping. Over the last few trips, it’s been mainly Kristina who has shipped. The C. family tells us they love to ship and in fact miss it when we’re home and doing it ourselves. We are extremely grateful to them for being willing to sacrifice the time to take care of the orders while we’re away.

Kristina also came along Tuesday evening to help with our photo shoot. No more of Joseph or Christopher running back to the camera, clicking the button and racing to get in position. She helped immensely. Thanks, Kristina! More pictures to follow from that shoot.

Final Two Pictures

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

A HUGE thank you to Joseph for selflessly giving of that day to take pictures. He started photographing at 8:30 a.m. and the final pictures were taken at 6:30 p.m. Thank you, Joseph, for your sacrifice! He also spent many hours processing the photos.

An Unusual Birthday: A Day in the Life of Anna

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

We celebrated Anna’s 18th birthday late (on Friday), and we wanted to give you a taste of what a birthday is like, at home and after the fact, and with an unusual twist in the evening. When we did a day with Abby earlier, people enjoyed it so much and requested something similar with a person in our immediate family, so here it is.

The day started out, not quite as early as some, since the girls didn’t exercise before Bible time. A little before 5:30 a.m., it was time to get up to be ready for Bible time at 5:45. All six of the children at home meet Dad in the living room for our own individual time to read God’s Word and pray, but we like to arrive early to be able to chat and visit with each other.

What greeted Anna in the living room? A “Happy Birthday” sign made with Mint M&Ms.

Ready for Bible time, bright and early!

Around 7:30, fresh muffins were available for breakfast, made by Sarah. A “page” was made throughout the house, announcing they were out. We even had enough to send to all THREE sets of relatives.

After breakfast, Anna had to start on a mission. It was decided at the last-minute to make matching outfits for Anna Marie, Melanie, Abby, and Bethany, to match us girls for our family picture (planned for this Tuesday). Anna began looking for patterns.

Then, it was time to make phone calls. What JoAnn’s store might have the fabric? Sarah had amazingly found the receipt from when we had bought ours in April, so that allowed Anna to approach the task more easily. After spending time on the phone, it was discovered two stores had it, but of course not the closest ones. Grand Island, Nebraska (not an option), and Topeka, Kansas (1 hour 15 minutes away). So, Dad graciously said he’d go to Topeka to get the fabric.

Time flew by, until it was 10:30, and Anna was going to squeeze in a little time to work with Sarah. Anna is training to be able to do Sarah’s job. For now, this will help Sarah to get the Moody book written, but as is hoped, someday the Lord will bring the right guy for Sarah, and she’ll no longer be available to do what she does.

Two book reprints need to get done, so Anna got to take the “master” seat and do hands on work with Sarah overseeing and coaching.

At Sarah’s desk…

11 a.m., and it’s GiGi and Grandad’s time. When Joseph was a little guy, he used to ride on the back of Mom’s canister vacuum. At that point, Grandad and Grandma offered to watch the younger ones so Mom could clean without distractions. That special Friday time has continued over the years. Now, little Abby, the great-granddaughter, gets to join, but the numbers are slimmer as children have graduated. Lately, it’s been just Anna, as Jesse and Mary have needed the time to do school since we have been gone quite a bit since September.

That line of cars is actually a parade.

Playing with Aunt Anna is so much fun.

Abby and Gigi.

Abby and Grandad.

After Anna comes home, she’s not really hungry for lunch, since a snack is always served on Fridays at G&G’s house, plus, a special dinner is coming up, so after chatting with whatever family members are around, she goes to practice her fiddle. Anna’s time is filled to the brim, and even though she’s done with school (graduation family party coming soon!), she does not lack for things to do. In fact, she’s busier than ever.

Cleaning used to happen on Friday mornings, but since Mary is busy with school, cleaning is done Friday afternoons or Saturdays. One of Anna’s chores is to polish the glass top on the stove.

When cleaning is through, it’s time to get ready to leave. Leave? Where? We’re going out to eat! A VERY special treat: Olive Garden. Let’s backup. On Anna’s actual birthday, in Spokane, when, bless her heart, she was totally down and out, a family gifted her in an incredible way. They handed a card to one of the Maxwells at the conference, and it was for the birthday girl. Upon opening it, Anna found a large amount of money, and it was indicated that the birthday girl could take the family out to eat at Olive Garden, and maybe she would like some of the relatives to join us. Anna was extremely overwhelmed by this family’s generosity. What a treat it was for all 16 of us to go out!

Dad asked the waitress how we could pray for her, and she was surprised by such a request and paused. She asked us to pray for “strength,” and upon inquiring what that exactly meant, she said she was a single mom and needed “strength.” We definitely prayed for that and for her salvation! :-)

Nathan and Abby (with her little jumper that a family gave to her in September).

This was the first party with the newlyweds back and a new addition to the family: Anna Marie (welcome!).

It was a rainy, autumn evening, very reminiscent of what October 31st weather is normally like. We were so grateful to be together in a cozy setting. Miss Bethany decided to be awake and crying, but after Sarah finished her meal, she took a turn with Bethany, and eventually Bethany fell asleep.

We had a sweet time in God’s Word after we got home. Nathan had to go back to work for part of the evening, thus he was missing in the picture above.

Then, Anna opened presents, with help from Abby, who was extremely delighted to be apart.

Turtle cheesecake time (minus the pecans). Sarah had made it the day before and put the final toppings on just before the actual event.

Dessert was enjoyed, and it was a special time for all.

Some of the relatives began to make their departures after dessert/cleanup, and Abby was promised by her daddy that she could play with Aunt Anna for just a few minutes.

Thank you for coming along to take a peek into this birthday at home (after-the-fact!).

Projects

Monday, November 8th, 2010

It’s been a “settling in” week as we unpacked, caught up on things, and enjoyed being back in the normal swing of things. We’ve had a few finishing projects that we needed to do in the house, and Joseph spent quite a bit of time Friday and Saturday installing two doors and finishing out door frames. Dad also needed to winterize the bus and prepare it for the imminent approach of winter.

This winter, we have several big projects, which include a music CD and another Moody book.

We are looking forward to the newlyweds arrival home this Tuesday!

5 Year Old’s Enthusiasm

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

From a recently e-mail: “I wanted to send this sweet picture of out oldest, Audrey, wearing her chore pack the first week and getting ready to unload the dishwasher. She RAVED about how she loved the chore pack because it reminded her of everything she needed to do in the morning instead of her forgetting things that needed to get done. We’ve loved the system so far! Thank you for creating it.”

Home Again

Monday, November 1st, 2010

We’re home after 2+ full days of driving back from Spokane, Washington. The Lord graciously watched over us as we went many miles over these past 7+ weeks. It hardly seems like we were home 9 days in the midst of that! We all have mental (some written) lists of things to accomplish over these next few months before we go again.

Thank you for praying for us–we are truly grateful. It is with happy hearts we reflect on all the Lord did in lives.

The Conference in Spokane

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Practicing

It was a rainy, cold, Friday afternoon as we embarked upon set up for our last conference on this trip, and we were happy to soon be ready for the weekend. Anna had started to feel awful Friday afternoon (headache and stomach upset), but she was barely able to make it through the entire music session. She did so well no one would have been able to tell that she wasn’t feeling good. After music, she went to the bus to be able to lay down and rest. Jesse had the flu, but he was able to make it through too. The enthusiasm from the crowd during the session was wonderful to see and hear.

Saturday dawned, again cool and damp, but we were looking forward to sharing with those who would come. We were definitely going to face challenges though: Anna was still down and out, and there was no way she could be up and trying to give sessions, plus, Jesse was running a fever, so he felt awful too. Now, we faced having two of our VERY important team members being sick. They are both a HUGE help in many ways such as running book tables, giving sessions, and other things. Even yesterday, on Anna’s 18th birthday, she was still down and out and mostly was flat on the couch. But, we are grateful that she is now back to normal, and Jesse’s feeling better.

Somehow, only by the Lord’s grace, our six-person team managed to speak and run book tables. Praise the Lord!

Hearts were very open to what was shared, and it was just a thrill to be able to have the opportunity to be in a city we’ve never spoken in before. The response from those who came was overwhelming.

The second session of the afternoon was our balloon session, and it caused concern in some of our hearts the thought of trying to give that session, which involves lots of hands-on twisting, to over 120 young people with two less helpers! It was hard enough without Christopher leading the session, but now minus three?! Joseph and Mary were able to take the 11 and unders, and John managed the entire older group by himself. Looking back, I really don’t see how it all worked out, but IT DID, and it was totally the LORD!

Thanks, girls, for helping with set up!
