Mooooo … Mmmm Milk

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Ready for the tour

Saturday, we girls, Mom, Bethie and Abby, went to a dairy farm for a tour. This dairy farm, Shatto, is known for their amazing milk. The milk is sold in glass bottles in a number of stores in the Kansas City area. It was an interesting time, and it made me appreciate the hard work farmers go to to provide us food. To you farming families, thank you! Thank you for your sacrifices, for your endurance, for working to produce quality food. We are grateful!

Love,
Sarah

A close up.

Okay, so I milked a cow, just briefly, but enough to give me the experience. Abby perched on my lap and watched me.

Bethie in the Ergo carrier.

Cows lined up to be milked, the automatic way.

In front of the milk truck. For those a bit older reading this, you'll know that milk used to be delivered in trucks like these.

Vaporizer Followup

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Thank you to everyone who commented on my vaporizer questions. I enjoyed seeing that I’m not the only one that has struggled with picking the perfect unit.

I found your answers informative and helpful. One thing I learned is that using purified water is a good thing.

I have ordered a Crane Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier. It seemed to have the best mix of features for the price.

My favorite recommendation was the “Heaven Fresh HF 707 Digital Ultrasonic Cool & Warm Mist HUMIDIFIER” — it looks like an amazing unit – but was more than I was wanting to spend. In hind site, since this Crane is now the fourth humidifier we’ve bought, I’ve already spent the equivalent of the Heaven Fresh.

Again – thank you for the help.

In Christ,
Nathan

Happy Birthday Sarah!!!

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Happy birthday, Sarah. We are greatly blessed as we think about all the ways you serve and bless this family and others. Eleven years ago, when the Managers of Their Homes book came out, you immediately took responsibility for packing and shipping each order. Now you effectively and efficiently manage all of our book titles, including their initial printings and reprints. You process orders, make sure we have the right boxes and other shipping supplies, handle the taxes and filing, answer the phone and e-mails, take photos, keep up the blog, and coordinate our speaking trips. Somehow in the midst of all of that, you find time to write your own books – books that have blessed, encouraged, and mentored thousands of children.

Not only are you the backbone of Titus2, you help with meals and cleaning here at home. You clean for Nathan and Melanie when Melanie is pregnant and unable to do so herself because of her difficult pregnancies. You make lunch for Gigi and Grandad one day a week and eat with them plus help with cleaning their house.

We love your heart for the Lord Jesus, your sweet spirit, and your great desire to fully serve and obey Him. We delight in the time we have had with you as a beautiful young woman who has chosen to continue to live in our home when you could have moved on to live any life that you desired.

While we are prepared to take over all that you do should the Lord bring a man into your life to be your husband, we are grateful for all you have given to our family and invested in so many others around the world. We are blessed to have you as a daughter and sister.

Anna, Sarah, Liz, and Mary

We enjoyed sewing time with Liz! I (Sarah) haven’t sewed for a long time, and it was a joy to get back into it. This particular fabric was purchased from Hobby Lobby. For those of you who have wanted to learn how to sew, take heart. It isn’t hard; it’s only a matter of following directions, staying patient, and having a seam ripper handy :-) .

Sarah

It’s John’s 21st Birthday!

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Our incredible, wonderful John turns 21 today. Happy Birthday, John! Where did all of those years go?! You were the mischievous little Maxwell boy, who was going to let his children climb the bathroom shelves and eat Rolaids whenever they wanted to. Oh, but things have changed, and no longer is that the thought. :-)

We love you so much and delight to see you serving the Lord. You bring an extra spark of life to wherever you are–truly, your contagious personality brings a smile to people who cross your path.

Happy 21st Birthday, John! We are excited.

“But if any man love God, the same is known of him” (1 Corinthians 8:3).

Things

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Our friends, Dave and Liz, are here for a visit. Days have been filled with many productive tasks:

  • Putting together a wood floor for Sarah and Anna’s desks
  • Assembling Anna’s “new” desk
  • Work
  • Sewing (girls)
  • Time in God’s Word
  • Fellowship in the Lord
  • Meal prep
  • Exercise
  • And more!

On top of that, the weather has been beautiful.

Love,
Sarah

The dining room was turned into a sewing room but by lunch time, the table was reclaimed.

We had a great set up--three sewing machines, a serger, two irons.

And then it was turned into an art classroom.

Art class in progress.

Vaporizers

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

With having two young children, we find we are often in need of a vaporizer. This winter, we are experimenting with running a vaporizer year round, whether they are sick or not.

The problem, is finding a good vaporizer. Does anyone have any suggestions. Here’s the criteria I’m looking for:
- Cool mist
- Ultra-sonic – these run quieter and have great control on mist output. When the girls aren’t sick, we run it on a very low setting over night.
- Easy cleaning – the ultra-sonic one we just discarded (due to mineral deposits I couldn’t get off the base, hence it wasn’t putting out mist) made it virtually impossible to clean the tube that the mist travels up. I found a thick, gross looking layer of pink slime coating the inside of this tube. I need to be able to get a cleaning brush/rag on every internal surface. I handle vaporizer cleaning, while I’m happy to use power tools to get things dis-assembled and clean, I don’t know that the vaporizer will work once I’m done with it. :)
- Easy filling — This is not a necessity, but would be very nice. Does that tank stay upright when upside down?

There’s the challenge. What have you found to work well? When responding, if you have both the model number and the name of the manufacturer I would be grateful.

Thank you.
Nathan

We’ll post them in order of who got the most votes.

Anna and John built the grocery store.

Mary and Jesse constructed the Victorian Cottage.

Joseph and Sarah put together the Mayor's House.

Dad and Mom did the church.

Abigail, with a little help from her daddy, creatively made the zoo.

Scripture Print Closeout

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

We wanted to let you all know that we are discontinuing the Scripture Prints. They just haven’t sold much, and we are ready to clear them out. Perhaps it is because they aren’t framed, or it might simply be that people aren’t interested. Whatever the case, we have some stock that we are going to clear out as we discontinue the Scripture Prints.

If you are interested, please see this link or click on an individual print below. This offer is only good while our supplies last.

Sarah

Blessed Christmas Everyone!

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

Our family wishes you a very blessed Christmas. Even if our circumstances, our health, or our finances aren’t all that we may desire, the fact that God came to redeem fallen man is something to celebrate. God did what we can’t do on our own. He paid the penalty for our sins, and those who have received His gift of salvation have something for which to praise Him.

Even though it’s unlikely that December 25th is the day Jesus was actually born, may we join our hearts in worship of God the Father, Who poured out His grace in sending us Jesus.

We love you all and are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of your lives.

A City Under Construction

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

This morning started early as we had some preparations for a special breakfast. We wanted to express our gratitude to the linemen that repair downed electrical lines. Dad and John made the delivery of muffins and milk about 7.

Then, mid-afternoon, everyone met in the kitchen and construction was begun on our mini gingerbread city, aka Gingerville. We will be posting pictures later of the finished product and let you all decide which is your favorite.

What We Have Been Preparing For

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Anna and Mary, with some help from Anna Marie, have been investing many hours in baking to preparing for our night of caroling, which is to come very soon. We will post more details later, along with the compiling party, how the caroling went, and other interesting facts.

If your family has been thinking of caroling to your neighbors, but haven’t gone for it, it’s not too late! You don’t have to bring goodies along (although it is a nice “extra”), just smiling faces and a joyful noise. Caroling is a thing of the past, for the most part. When was the last time carolers were at YOUR door? I could count on one hand the number of times we have been caroled to. It’s something our neighbors love. Now, with the added grandchildren effect, we have the cute factor.

Merry Christmas!

Love,
Sarah

Mary, Anna Marie, and Anna

Yesterday afternoon, we girls made cards. It was great working as a team.

Christopher and Anna Marie stopped in, as Joseph was going to take their picture. Christopher grabbed a few pictures for us of our work.

The front of the card. A special thanks to Mrs. Kim C. for your inspiration on this card. Your cards have been incredible over the years, and it spurred us on to creativity.

We were watching the little girls this afternoon so Nathan and Melanie could have a special Christmas dinner out and time to shop. So, of course, we can't help but add this picture of Bethany Mary took.

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people” (Luke 2:10).

It was a weekend of music

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Friday, we went up to the Omaha area to do music at my grandma’s care home. We left home to no snow and arrived in the area with six inches! On our way up, we saw many, many vehicles that had gone off the road the night before, when the snow had started. The vehicles had been abandoned and were just waiting for tow trucks to clear them out.

It was a joy to share with those there through music and testimony. Since we had just been in April, I think some of them remembered us, and we had a good group of about 30 residents, plus some of the staff came too. Joseph, John, Anna, Jesse, and Mary shared a number of Christmas songs, beautifully arranged, interspersed with their testimonies. In addition, it was a great practice run for Saturday evening’s event. A post will be coming soon on that!

Being at care homes frequently reminds me of the frailty of life. Some may live long and experience the affects of aging, but some may live only a short time. As we look forward to this Christmas season, are you prepared to step into eternity? It is not a question to wait to settle. For if you wait until eternity to deal with your sin, it is too late.

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:27-28).

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed” (Romans 10:9-11).

It’s Been a Sweet Journey

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Last December, some friends of ours asked if Mom would consider leading a mother/daughter Bible study. As Mom developed the material for the Bible study and started leading it, the Lord also began making it evident to Dad and Mom that this was to be Mom’s next book, which was eventually titled Sweet Journey.

As a surprise and to express their gratefulness to Mom for all she invested in the Bible study, Mrs. C. and her girls made a beautiful quilt. Each of us in the Bible study wrote out a Scripture verse on muslin fabric that was meaningful to us or that we had memorized during the study, on squares, that were placed throughout the quilt. Those squares were then stitched into the quilt. The center blocks were Titus 2:3, 4, and 5. In addition, several of Mom’s favorite verses were also written out and placed into the quilt.

It was with great excitement the gift was given to Mom before Bible study one Wednesday in September. Mom was surprised, thrilled, and overwhelmed at the labor of love expressed by the quilt.

Each one of us in the Bible study has been blessed by Sweet Journey. The Lord has used this study in our lives to change us and draw us closer to Him. The testimonies we are receiving from those who are reading the book bring us to near tears as ladies share what the Lord is doing in their lives.

My mom has walked an amazing path, from being a depressed mom with three children who could hardly wait for us all to be in school and who certainly wasn’t considering having more than three, to being a joyful mom of eight children. By the time she finishes homeschooling, she will have homeschooled for thirty years. In the education arena, she would have received a nice retirement!

The Lord has used Mom to share with ladies across the world. She has been there in the trenches, and she knows what it’s like.

Love,
Sarah

Winter Days is Here

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

With great excitement we share that Winter Days with the Moodys, book #7 in the series, is available! This is, I believe, the first book to be released at the “right” season. In fact, the book begins soon after Thanksgiving, so it truly is exactly “on time.” Each book is an incredible process, and I felt the Lord’s Hand every step of the way. I am grateful to each of my family members for their support and encouragement as they too have heavily invested in the book.

Winter Days with the Moodys

Here’s what one mom recently shared after reading a “pre-release” version of Winter Days.

My daughter’s whole attitude changes while reading these books. She learns from the attitudes and experiences of the Moody children, and she imitates the godly character traits that she sees in them. I have watched my daughter’s actions and reactions change in ways that honor God, and it is a result of the good influence of the Moody family.

As a mother, I am very challenged by the parenting skills of Mr. and Mrs. Moody. I find that God uses the Moody parents to shine light on areas in my own parenting that need to be reshaped by His hand.

Finally, my children are able to read books about a family whose lifestyle and values are like ours. The Moody family is very similar to our own homeschooling, “larger-than-typical” family. The Moody series is the only fictional work I have found which parallels the real blessings, challenges, and experiences that our family faces.

In our family, we have tried to implement many of the tools provided by Titus 2. The Moody books refer to ChorePacks and scheduling in a very positive light which encourages my children to embrace the implementation of these in our home. As a mom, the Moody books have really helped me to see how the Titus 2 resources “play out” in a “real” family setting. — Kelly

Dinner by a Duo

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

For those who have personally attended the Dwelling Together in Unity session, you’ll know what this post is about. For the rest of you, John and Anna made a delicious meal together and easily agreed on the menu. Maybe this will inspire some brothers and sisters to team up and bless Mom by cooking up dinner.

Ladies’ Neighborhood Brunch

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

Friday morning, we had the joy of hosting a brunch for ladies in our neighborhood. It was a special blessing to fellowship with our neighbors. It seems in the culture we live in now, interactions with neighbors are just an occasional wave or a “hi” here or there. So, it was wonderful to be able to spend time with the ladies.

We had quite a spread of food, and the girls and Mom planned a wonderful menu including meat & cheese empanadas, ham/cheese casserole, fruit, veggies with dip, pumpkin scones (thanks, Anna Marie!), pie crust with cinnamon/sugar, pumpkin pound cake (thanks, Mrs. C.), and delightful hot drinks.

Instead of just breaking up into individual conversations, Mom asked if each lady could share how they came to the neighborhood. It was very interesting to hear the background behind the families being here, and we really enjoyed hearing their stories.

It was a special time with our neighbors. Maybe it’s something you might enjoy doing this holiday season in your home.

Love,
Sarah

Baking was done on Thursday.

Preparing for the Winter

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Winter here in Kansas is not like it is up north, but it still gets cold, and it does snow. Before we built this house, some diseased Dutch elm trees had to come down. We’ve been using that wood for the past two winters. I heard our stash will likely hold another two years, depending on the temperatures this winter. I love the smell of a wood fire on a delightfully crisp autumn day or a cold winter day. Dad had an idea for wood storage. Instead of bringing it inside on a pallet, he built a neat wood “bin”–using leftover wood and items we already had here. The guys have taken a few minutes here and there to haul wood from the back yard to under our deck.

I had to include this picture of the two A's on Anna's birthday. Anna's holding a card Abby made for her.

“But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day” (Matthew 24:20).

Happy 19th Birthday, Anna!

Monday, October 31st, 2011

It is with joy that we celebrate Anna’s 19th birthday. She brings an extra ray of sunshine to our home and ministry. We delight in the young lady she is and her love for the Lord Jesus. Happy Birthday! We love you!

“…for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman” (Ruth 3:11).

Flowers from our Nieces

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Flowers for Aunt Anna (and Aunt Sarah got some too).

Late this afternoon, Anna and I were over at Nathan and Melanie’s a little ahead of the family. It was a beautiful day for a walk. Before we went, Abby picked some flowers. So sweet. Bethany loved the flowers too.

You know, I am grateful for the gift of little children in our lives. It is a joy to see their love for life, enthusiasm, precociousness, innocence, and excitement.

Love,
Sarah

I love that expression!

And there's cute Bethany.

“But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14).

Unloading

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Here are a few pictures from our initial unload last night.

Our "welcome home" was some candy from Nathan.

So where did Nathan get CaraMilk bars from, since they are from Canada? A HomeTrack student sent Nathan a gift–a huge box of CaraMilk bars! Nathan wanted to share them with us since we have all pitched in to help with ITonRamp. We’ll enjoy them too. Thank you, Mrs. Sondra!

Being home does feel wonderful, but we all enjoy traveling as the Lord leads. This year, it was 3 months on the road! It was amazing to come home to fall: crunchy leaves, cool temperatures, colorful trees.

More pictures later.

Love,
Sarah

“And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again” (Acts 21:6).

Parked. At a Detroit Diesel-Allison Shop.

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

We have totally seen the Lord’s Hand. Let me explain.

1. When the tire alarm was going off, we had to find an exit to pull off on. We ended up being about three miles from an exit, and upon taking it, we saw signs that said “accident ahead” on the highway, and brake lights. Wow!
2. As we pulled into the Petro, the transmission light strangely came on. The tires ended up not having any problems, but the transmission light continued to stay on. If the tire alarm hadn’t gone off (which it turned out was for no reason), we wouldn’t have stopped, and we would have been stuck in the traffic back up, with a transmission problem, and likely have been stranded right there.
3. The transmission was heating up just parked, so Dad and John decided we needed to get back on the road. The interstate was now closed, and the only option was a back road. So, we took it.
4. We hit rain on the two lane road, but we were fine.
5. I found a Detroit Diesel shop which was about 30 miles away. We were already driving that direction.
6. We were grateful the transmission was stuck in third and not first.
7. We got to the shop, and we reset something on the transmission. It popped out of third, and we wondered if it was fixed.
8. As we began to drive to see if it was working, it popped into first. Wow! That made us even more grateful that we were in third before. Those thirty miles would have gone very slowly.
9. Dad talked to the service guy, and he had an idea for what might be the problem. It is possibly as simple as a speed sensor that went bad. They said they can look at it right away in the morning when they open at 7:30 a.m.
10. We are just praising the Lord. Truly, we rest in His hands. We didn’t have any conferences scheduled until Friday, so it’s all fine.
11. We would appreciate prayer that it would get fixed easily and quickly in the morning.
12. And, we have a great place to park and all the amenities we need right here (beds, food, air conditioning via the generator). What more could you want?!

Love,
Sarah

The guys partially unloaded a bay to get into the panel area.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalms 32:8).
