It’s Been a Journey

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

One year ago, exactly today, we moved from our house of almost 20 years to a house built with much hard work and prayer. It was about four years ago, when it was clear the Titus2 ministry had outgrown our home, and Joseph and John said, “We’ll build you a house, Dad!”

It took two and a half years of hard work building the house. Christopher bought our previous house.  We took that money, lots of sweat equity and some more funds that the Lord provided to build it.

We took thousands of pictures, so for the sake of time, I wasn’t able to pick as many as I would have liked to, but here’s a chronicle of the journey of building it. Remember, you can click into any picture to make it bigger.

The Lord protected us every step of the way! There were many times throughout the process, Dad was seeking the Lord when things looked impossible. Jesus always gave the direction Daddy needed.

“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain” (Psalms 127:1).

It all started with tearing down the old, small house, whose foundation was falling apart.

“Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste” (Isaiah 28:16).

Watching the demolition...

“Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am” (Psalms 39:4).

The cement work begins!

“In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury” (Proverbs 14:23).

“A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast…”  (Proverbs 12:10)

“And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers…” (Malachi 4:6).

Truly, many times of sweet fellowship were had!

Pourin' the basement!

“Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate” (Psalms 127:4-5).

In the middle of the process, we discovered tons of "rubble" that had been buried underneath the top layer of dirt in the backyard. I guess an old house had been torn down and "buried." It was an interesting experience to haul it all away!

Tons of caulking...

“And there ye shall eat before the Lord your God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the Lord thy God hath blessed thee” (Deuteronomy 12:7).

Electricity to the house!

Seeding was definitely a job!

“Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:38)

The whole goal of the house was to allow the ministry to have the room it needed so we could be used of the Lord to equip, exhort, and encourage families in our Savior! Truly, we’ve seen Him do that over and over again. This was just a tool in His Hands! We sometimes wonder how the ministry fit in our old house. The Lord must have multiplied our space like the widow’s mite.

It was a big day when the sheetrock arrived!

Some days, the guys worked late.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalms 133:1).

This was taken on Anna's birthday!

Dad did tons and TONS of painting!

Tiling was another HUGE job!

Many doors to paint and then hang!

Joseph spent many hours on the fireplace...

It passed inspection!

“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme” (1 Peter 2:13).

Putting together shelving before move-in!

And the move began one year ago today...

If you want to read a few blog posts on our move, please see the posts from March 2009.

Week #4: Unposted Pictures

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Another week has flown by, and it’s time for Week #4 of unposted pictures. I hope you enjoy by the fuller glimpse into it. I want to share several specific ways the Lord guided us.

  • We made it back over the mountain pass from Carson City to California safely. The guys “chained up” for the first time, and the truck driver who pulled in next to us drove that route every day, and he gave the boys some tips on the process.
  • While we were in White City, we were able to share at a men’s home. Dad and Mom were out for a walk when they saw the home, and after talking to the administrator, music was set up for late that afternoon!
  • We saw the Lord soften hearts at conference after conference. I remember specifically one city on this trip: I came into the girls’ room and my heart sunk. You would have thought I was about to give a funeral, not a girls’ talk! But, as I shared, hearts softened! What a blessing that is.

Mount Shasta

Lake Shasta

We had quite a few rainy days on this trip, so the sunny ones were a treat!

Sheep grazing in a pasture.

A view from the balcony (of the men's home, that is). For some reason people don't like to sit up front.

Dad chatting with two of the men.

Daddy talking.

We often parked at churches, and it became our "home sweet home."

Jesse helping to load up after the Friday evening sessions.

Here's how to set up a speaker, step-by-step from Christopher.

Mary helping with the balloons.

Usually Jesse loads up, but that weekend, Joseph did quite a bit.

Christopher enjoying a little one.

Although we've been in some very tight spots (I'm serious!) wtih the bus, we've never become stuck. Here Joseph is holding tree branches out of the way as the bus exits an extremely tight church parking lot.

It was in this same town, that we had to stop at an auto parts store. We pulled into the parking lot, dropped John off, and then parked off to the side on the street (remember, Uriah doesn’t just go anywhere in a parking lot, and in a small lot, we’d take almost all the spots). Not realizing John was related to the bus, John heard some interesting conversation. They wondered if the bus was going to park in the street overnight (figured it probably would! you know how people are these days), wondered if the driver had a CDL to drive that thing (you actually don’t since it’s an RV), among other items.

Do you remember the picture I posted on our trip of two children listening to music? Well, you'll see them again here.

People enjoy hearing Christopher play the harmonica!

“Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Peter 1:8).

Fridays are cleaning days for us, and today we cleaned two houses — ours and Nathan & Melanie’s. Abigail has learned to be a great help so in the photos below you will notice that she is helping to dust. Tomorrow we clean Grandma’s house.

Life has been very busy here! With Melanie being on bedrest, we’re over there a lot. Grandad and Grandma’s health isn’t doing very well so we help them! Not to mention all the other things that are going on.

With the reassurance of hearing the baby’s heartbeat, there is a new spark of joy that has reappeared in everyone’s countenances. There is renewed hope in looking forward to this new little one!

Spring is here so Mom changed the flannel sheets on the bed back to the normal ones!

Miss Abigail is full of energy and life. It is such a joy to be able to spend time with her!

Bus Cleaning and Birthday Celebration #2

Monday, March 8th, 2010

It’s been another busy week at the Maxwells. We love our Sundays: a day to worship the Lord and a day of resting to recharge for the coming week. Yesterday morning, we girls and Mom tackled cleaning the bus. We hadn’t had the time to tackle it since we’ve been back, and although we’d cleaned it many times on the road, it still needed a thorough one plus all of the bedding needed to be washed. There was much to be done, but in about two hours, the bus was back to being “road worthy.”

The next trip will be here before we know it! We will be doing three homeschool conventions in May, and we would love to do some single-evening conferences and church services in between. If you’re interested, please see our Speaking Schedule.

This past Friday, we also officially celebrated John’s birthday. When you have a birthday on the road, you get a bonus: you really end up with two birthdays, but only have to turn one year older! :-) I figured out that this year, over half of us will have birthdays while we’re away.

One of our friends at the nursing home appears to be dying. For two years now, Christopher has gone to pray with him each week that he’s able. It’s been a special time for both of them. As a side note, Mr. M. had prayed for several years for a church to do services at the home, and we were the answer to prayer. We know dear Mr. M. is trusting in the Lord Jesus for his salvation!

Noticed what happened to the numbers on his cake?!

The boys have started an exercise routine early in the morning, from 5-5:30 to wake them up for their Bible time right after that. One thing John received was a pull-up bar.

Vacuuming!

Yes, this is another new guinea pig! Jesse noticed his first pig wasn't doing very well, and after some research, he found they do better if they have a buddy. So, another one was acquired, and the guinea pigs are as happy as ever. Names have been discussed, and for now the lighter one is "Butter" and the darker "Peanut."

Cute!

“But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city” (Hebrews 11:16).

Mount Rainier

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Seeing Mount Rainier brought back many memories from the time we lived in the Seattle area. I really loved looking at the mountain, well, at least when you could see it. I remember when I was told that the locals could even forecast the weather by looking at Rainier. If you could see it, that meant it was going to rain. If you couldn’t see the mountain, it was raining. I wonder if that is why it’s spelled “Rain”ier? It truly is a very beautiful place to live.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God
(Psalms 90:2).

Life at the Maxwells

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Things have been busy as we continue on with normal life–at least as normal as life is when we’re at home! Last week, Dad took two days to visit Gram (his mom) who is in the final stages of Alzheimer’s. It was very hard for him to see her doing so poorly physically. It’s amazing how frail our bodies are.

We’ve been busy with school, working, ministry things, and family time. Grandad had minor hand surgery yesterday, which went well, so Mom was with Grandad and Grandma in Kansas City for a good portion of the day. On Monday, John installed a stove in the basement, and we’ve been enjoying the warmth–it’s not quite spring here in Kansas. Our other wood stove was not heating the basement enough, so it’s a blessing to have it warmer!

May Jesus give you grace to rest in Him, joy in Him, and delight in Him!

Sarah

John positioning where the pipe will go.

We had a spur-of-the moment visit Tuesday night: a fiddler and a mandolin player! Several months ago, Dad had met the mandolin player at a convenience store.  As they walked out, Dad made a friendly comment to him striking up a conversation.  The man mentioned he comes to Leavenworth sometimes to visit a friend, who is a fiddler. They enjoy playing their instruments together. This man played the mandolin. Dad invited them to come over sometime! Tuesday evening, they called and wondered if they could come over, and we assured them they could. The fiddler had been playing for about 50 years! We were thrilled to listen, and several in our family brought out their instruments to join in. It was a special time. Grandad and Grandma were also with us, and we had a wonderful time in God’s Word after music.

Fiddlin'

Pickin'!

Jesse’s guinea pig had died right before Christmas, and Mary had surprised Jesse with a replacement one the same day! Sadly, the new one died right after Christmas. It wasn’t a good time to get another one right before we left on our trip, so we waited until we arrived home and settled back in.

Pretty cute!

Even Abby likes him.

“A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day” (Deuteronomy 11:27).

The Joy of Little Children

Children are such a blessing…

Little boys and cars...

Loving the big guys playing with him!

Our adorable niece.

Week #2: Some Unposted Pictures

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

As we continue on with our series of unposted pictures, I first want to reflect on what the Lord did during that second week.

Life had been so full and busy those last few weeks before we left, that we still had more preparations to do on our new sessions, which we were giving at The Christ-Led Family Conference. We needed the Lord’s strength even more, and we felt it! This was the younger five’s first time giving sessions, and they did an incredible job. The Lord’s hand of blessing was very evident! We had the privilege of ministering at a Sunday evening service through music, testimony, and Dad preaching.

We saw the Lord clearly at work as Dad sought Him for where to go next. Flagstaff had been rescheduled due to a winter storm, with tons of rain predicted for Arizona and California. It seemed anywhere we’d go we’d be met with lots of rain. The Lord allowed us a special time at the Joshua Tree National Park, with a brief hike before a rain storm. We had our first real night of camping; it seemed we were out in the middle of nowhere, with no cell phone and Internet access. It was a special time together as a family. The next day, we had plans to hike, but those were changed when we had a part that was broken on the water pump. It was a little disappointing, but as we drove back to “civilization,” we had a request from someone who wondered if we could do a Wednesday evening church service (this was Tuesday). We could see why the Lord brought us back; we were thrilled for another opportunity to share!

Sarah

John turned 19 on the trip... I started a tradition last year of getting the little mini candy bars and making the person's age out of the candy.

John had ice cream sandwiches for his "on the road" birthday celebration. His real family party will be this weekend!

Laundry is a challenge to juggle on the road. But, we've found it works well to use a laundromat: we can have all of our loads going at once, so laundry can be accomplished in about two hours!

Doing school in the bus!

Those beautiful, rich blue skies and towering palm trees were a treat in Arizona.

Talking to a little boy.

One of my "jobs" is to make up signs at each conference, directing where people are to go for each session.

It was a gorgeous day in Tucson that Saturday, so many people ate outside.

This man shared with Dad that he got rid of his TV after the weekend conference!

We write postcards back to our dear friends at the nursing home. Each Sunday we do them!

Here's our new furniture up front. You can click into the picture to see a bigger view. The seats were very comfortable, and we had plenty of space!

A Heartbreak

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

It’s always a delight to me when young ladies want to talk after the girls’ session at conferences. It seems the majority of the time it’s older girls in their teens sharing with me, but at one city, there were several little girls, maybe ages 8 or 9. Instead of what you might expect “thanks so much: I really enjoyed it!” I was surprised: they had solid questions. My heart broke over one such girl.

I share many things through Womanhood, but one aspect is having a good relationship with your parents and being open and honest with them. I also encourage that you should be able to tell your parents anything and to not hide things. This girl asked me how she could be open and talk when her mom won’t listen. When I asked how her mom wouldn’t listen, she said her mom will tell her just “to get over it.” This little girl’s eyes brimmed with tears as she talked. Oh, how my heart hurt! If only this mom knew what her words were doing to her daughter. I encouraged her to find a time when her younger brothers and sisters were in bed for the night and work at sharing her heart with her mom again. Please, dear moms, listen to your girls, don’t think anything is too silly, and work on that precious relationship. It’s so important!

My own mom is wonderful in listening to me: and she knows how I like to talk :-) . She’s made it a priority to nurture that relationship and develop it.

Sarah

“Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile” (Psalms 34:11-13).

February Corners

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

We were able to send out the February Dad’s and Mom’s Corners yesterday; they are a little late (we like to send them out the first week of the month) due to our trip. May you be encouraged by what Dad and Mom have to share this month!

Many blessings,
Sarah

P.S. At some point soon, Dad’ll be doing a blog post on the funeral; thank you for lifting up dear, sweet Mrs. B.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).

Week #1: Some “UnPosted” Pictures

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

As you can imagine, we take a ton of pictures on each trip, and only a small number in the overall scheme of things is posted. I was curious how many pictures we took, so I checked: over 5,600 pictures! After all, since they’re digital, there’s no harm in taking them (but long-term storage is more the issue).

I had the thought to post a few pictures as “memories” from the last six weeks as one blog post, but as I began to look through them, we have too many “unposted” pictures to go with just one blog post, so watch for a few more over the next weeks!

Seeing the hand of the Lord at work was amazing.

For week #1, here are a few things. The evening of January 2nd stands out in my mind, as we had bad news with the bus regarding some mechanical issues. Worst case was it could take two weeks to get the parts and the bus fixed, OR, maybe it wasn’t what we thought. Long story short, over that jam-packed Monday, January 4th, and lots of prayer, we were able to get a part overnighted. John installed it Tuesday morning in frigid outdoor temperatures, and he also made a temporary fix for another problem that would hold until we could stop on a free day at a Detroit Diesel shop and get a part installed. So, Tuesday afternoon, we were OFF, with Uriah running like a champ. We have found that the more problems we have prior to a trip, the more the spiritual fruit during the trip.

Dad has reminded us that never once have we missed a conference due to a bus problem. We also saw the Lord at work when an oil line blew in Oklahoma City; things looked a bit dismal that night as it was contemplated getting it fixed (and likely not going to Carlsbad Caverns). The next morning, John made several phone calls, and he decided he would fix it himself. We ended up being a stone’s throw from a place which had a part John needed to repair it.

I can’t imagine life without the Lord Jesus. Seeing Him work is thrilling: people may think that being a Christian means that everything will go well, at least from an earthly standpoint. No, it’s not that way. Yet there’s joy in following Jesus, in resting in Him through trials and challenges. Our desire is that as we share how the Lord is working, you will see the reality of Him doing the same in your life.

Here are some of the “unposted” pictures from the first week.

John checking the tire pressure before we left.

With our new furniture in the bus, we now have seatbelts. Here everyone is digging the first time for those seatbelts. After they were fished through the seat, we were fine, but it took a bit of work at the beginning! In next week's unposted pictures, I'll make sure to include one of our new seating.

Another gorgeous view out the bus, this time as we drove at White Sands.

You know how things go: we even had trouble with our generator. At one point, it wouldn't start, and when it did, it was just full of white smoke! Here's one such try in Las Cruces. The problem was eventually solved.

It is really winter!

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Since we were out on the West Coast for so long we got used to seeing – green! Now we’re settling back into the way things look in winter.

We were in California Sunday, and then...

in Kansas Wednesday!

Digging out from under the piles!

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

There is much unpacking (well, it’s really unloading as we don’t pack everything in bags now that we’re traveling in the bus) and settling down that is happening now that we’re home. Sarah has the most, because she does the trip “aftermath” for the ministry.

We were  excited to be back home after being gone for six weeks. There are many aspects about house living that one finds they forget, and then appreciate when they are back home. It is  amazing not bumping into each other all the time – or waiting for the hallway to clear before walking back to get something! We don’t have to watch our water usage like we did on the bus. It feels strange to go to the cupboard and get out a real plate since we have used paper products for the whole trip. We have to lose the habit of opening a drawer a short distance and then pushing down on the baby latch since we have become accustomed to that with the bus drawers. Even drinking from a normal cup seems unusual since we have been drinking bottles of water for so long.

Getting all of our things from our bunks is a bit of a challenge when we're all working at the same time!

There are lots of places where things get stashed, and if we don't do a thorough inspection of the bus when we get home then a few weeks later we'll be looking for something and have forgotten that it was on the bus!

Jesse unloaded the books and such from the bays.

Like we mentioned earlier Grandma has been sorting the mail while were gone, and she made it very easy to sort through it all now that we're home!

Yesterday, KDOT was spraying the roads with a salt/liquid mixture because another winter storm is predicted for this area, and we drove through it so Jesse washed the bus to get the salt off!

“…O Lord GOD…let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.” (2 Samuel 7:29)

Flagstaff

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Our conference in Flagstaff went well! After setup and before the conference started, we had a nice time of fellowship, with the board of the homeschool group there in Flagstaff, over a meal. We appreciated getting to know them and their families.

Setup was quick and easy. The evening was over before we new it, and then we were on our way toward home since we had decided to drive for an hour before we went to bed!

Joseph always does a wonderful job with getting the sound setup.

The Answer!

Monday, February 15th, 2010

You all did a great job of guessing the obstacles for our bus found in the photo, and you mentioned many more good ones than the three we had targeted for you to find. Below is the retouched photo numbered with the three things we were particularly watching out for when we were at this point in our drive: 1) Power/cable lines. Especially getting onto country property, you need to be very careful not to snag one of these. 2) Low trees. Our bus is 13′ tall – taller than two grown men standing on each others’ shoulders and then add two more feet to that. Unlike power or cable lines, if the hazard is small branches or leaves, we can sometimes pull/move branches out of the way to provide for access. 3) Tight turns.

Thank you, Joseph, for your help on the photo!

“O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:” (Psalm 66:8)

Traveling in a bus!

Friday, February 12th, 2010

As we travel and visit areas and homes, there are many places where we can’t go because the bus is just too big. We have heard many exclamations after we make it into a very tight area, or when people see the bus after not being able to make the turn into their driveway, about how big the bus really is. It’s just  hard to picture how large the bus is when not in person.

I just happened to get the photo below, and later realized that there are three things in the picture that show the issues with many roads and the reason why we can’t fit down many of them. We are constantly on a watch for these obstacles, and there are many more that aren’t even seen in the photo, but for now we’ll stick with only 3 of them.

Can you find the three hazards to watch out for when driving a big vehicle in this photo? Remember you can click into the photo to get a closer look. You can post your guesses as a comment.

We’re here!

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Yesterday, we made it safely to Fallbrook, California. It was a beautiful drive here, and we enjoyed the California sun. A few weeks ago when we were here, it rained, so we’re thankful for the warmth while we have it before heading back to Kansas.

Our drive was pretty much uneventful (except for one high-speed panic stop when someone dove for an exit and stopped in front of us), and we are always grateful for the safety that the Lord has given us. There are times when vehicles don’t realize that the bus doesn’t stop as fast as they do, but still the Lord has protected us from a wreck.

We had a bit of an exciting time getting to the church, because some of these California back roads did not seem to be made with buses in mind. It felt like following a snake through the hills, but as always, Dad was a good driver, and we were able to make it here safely.

Today was quiet, and it was refreshing to take a breather after some busy days.

Driving down the interstate.

A family here in California gave us some grassfed beef. We enjoyed some fry-pan hamburgers the other night for dinner.

Beautiful Victoria

Friday, February 12th, 2010

During our time in Victoria, five of us were blessed with the privilege of being able to hike and enjoy some of the scenery on the island. Our conference coordinators had left their van at the house we had parked at so that we could be able to go sightseeing. On Monday morning, Dad, Mom, John, Jesse, and I went on two hikes.

The first one was down to the sound, and then we still had a little time so we decided to see if we could make it to the top of Mount Work. The trees, ferns, moss, and water were so lusciously green. It was a beautiful time, and the scenery was breathtaking. Even though it was cloudy at the top, we still enjoyed the hike, and we just imagined what it would look like if there were no clouds!

Tea Time

Friday, February 12th, 2010

We had a special time Tuesday afternoon at a Mother Daughter Tea.  The coordinators had done an amazing job at making the time special. Everything was beautifully decorated. Sadly, we didn’t get a picture of all the pretty decorations, but you might get an idea of what the tables looked like by observing them in the background of a couple of the photos.

For the first session Mom gave Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit, and then Sarah, Mom, and I gave Keepers at Home, a session we now have for young ladies. Because Mary was sick, she did not attend the tea, so we had to change our workshop around a little – giving Mom some of it.

We were encouraged to see so many mothers and daughters seeking to serve the Lord and their families from home. It seems so many have lost the vision of a woman staying at home and taking care of her family. I am ever so grateful to my mom for what she has invested in my life. I know that her staying home and not sending me to school has had an irreplaceable impact on my life, and I desire to keep that same vision. We want to encourage girls to have the vision to be keepers at home and to invest in their future families like their moms have invested in their lives. We are suggesting girls start to prepare for being a keeper at home some day where they are homeschooling their children and caring for their families. The Keepers at Home session grew from seeing that so many Christian young women have lost the vision of staying home and caring for a family.

Thank you to all who did such a wonderful job in the kitchen!

Only A Grandma’s Touch!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Grandma has been sorting our mail while we are gone, and recently she sent some of it to us. We enjoyed seeing how organized it was – just like Grandma!

We love and miss you, Grandma!

The mail wasn't just placed in a box! It was categorized and put in separate bags.

Federal Way – 2/5/2010

Saturday, February 6th, 2010
We were blessed by an incredible couple of days in Edgewood, WA. I really enjoy this area of the country for a number of reasons: 1) I was born in the area, and 2) the scenery is incredible.
On Wednesday, the coordinators provided us with a delicious dinner of salmon and chicken. On Thursday, we were very grateful to meet a blog-reader. She graciously baked a fantastic dinner of tri-tip, green beans, mashed potatoes, and more – thank you, Mrs. R. ‘
The conference went very well. Just as we were about to pack up, the rain started. It was nice, though, because it wasn’t very hard rain.

Port Orchard

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Our conference, that was near Port Orchard, Washington, was a blessing. We arrived at the church fairly early in the afternoon that day. It is so amazing how the Lord plans the way things will go, because even in arriving early, we used all of the time. It took a while, getting into the parking lot, but Dad is a very good driver, and he did a great job in a difficult situation. Our coordinators had arrived by this time. They were a neat family, and we really enjoyed our time with them. They had worked hard, and we pray that the Lord blessed their efforts. An extra special blessing for us was the dinner they provided. Thank you H family.

We ended up doing something we have never done before during set up. In working out which rooms to use for the various sessions, we discovered that there wasn’t a room big enough for the Dad’s session. We ended up cleaning out a room, which was being used as a storage room. It took us about half an hour to clean it out. Many hands make light work. The Lord blessed the space that night. We had a couple of extra chairs but there was just enough room for all who came.

Monday Evening

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

After singing at the nursing home on Monday afternoon, we drove the thirty minutes to the church where our conference was being held. Setup went smoothly, and after that we had our family Bible time before the conference. It was really neat to see quite a few of the families who came to the Sunday night concert come back Monday night for the conference.

Jesus’ Girl,

Mary

Eternally Grateful!

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Yesterday we had the privilege of playing at another retirement home! The title of this post came from a lady who said that she was eternally grateful that we came to their home. She had been thoroughly blessed and encouraged by the music!

The most exciting part of the whole afternoon was when one of the ladies became born again! She was talking to Mary and mentioned how she liked Mary’s smile. Mary said that her smile was because of Jesus, and then Mary asked her if she knew Jesus as her Lord and Saviour. The woman told Mary that she had her religion, and that she prayed every day. Mary then talked with her more about spiritual things and next the woman asked, “So how do I ask Jesus to come into my heart?”

Mary then called Dad to come over and explain because she thought he could do a better job of sharing the plan of salvation. He showed the lady how we are all sinners and that we have all broken God’s  commandments.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
(Romans 3:23)

She admitted that she had sinned and that she was worthy of hell. Then Dad went on to share the Good News of how Jesus died on the cross for our sins – to pay our penalty. We just have to repent of our sins, and place our faith in Him, and we will spend our eternity in Heaven.

Here's the view from our vantage point!

We were so excited, because there were twelve people that committed to reading their Bible three times every day!

The 3 pieces of advice that this gentlemen would pass along to young men. 1. Go to bed at night. 2. When you go to bed, make sure you pray. 3. Respect others.

Dad and and the lady who just became born again! What a happy sight. This lady was very excited!

This lady has read the Bible through 40 times in the last 40 years.

“Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” (Luke 15:10)

A Special Evening

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Thursday when Dad and Mom were out for a walk, they noticed a retirement home. They went in to see if maybe we could play some music that evening for them.

It turned out that the administrator and another man that worked there attended the church where we sang the night before. After all the details were set up, we left, ran a few errands, and came back to set up.

It was a men’s only home, and they greatly enjoyed our music. Many of them were veterans, and Christopher used some stories from Grandad’s Army life to illustrate salvation to them. During America the Beautiful, it was so sweet to see many of the veterans singing along. America truly is the country that they poured their lives out for!

Our hearts were full, and we were very blessed that we were able to minister to those in that home.

This gentleman could have joined right in with us during music, because he was matching as well!

These two men are shaking hands to show that they are going to keep each other accountable to reading the Bible every day!

“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:27)
