Hiking in the Smokies

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Yesterday afternoon, we went on a hike with a brother in Christ, who took us on a trail in the Smokies. It was a beautiful day, and we enjoyed our time (driving and hiking).

As we walked beside a gentle stream, my mind kept going back to Psalms 23 verse 2 (see the end of this post). In some areas, the water was flowing, but there were a number of pools which were still, and you could see a pretty reflection. I loved the tree-shrouded hike with the wide path, leaves scattered across it, the smell of the “forest,” and just enjoying my family and God’s Creation. Isn’t the Lord amazing to give us those sweet times of refreshment?

Love,
Sarah

This Weekend …

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Was wonderful! We spent the night at an RV park in South Carolina. We are always very tired after a conference and were very grateful for a place to stop, and plug in. Next weekend is Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

More later.

Friday evening.

The coordinator's family from Mt. Airy also attended the Charlotte conference.

“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalms 118:24).

Mt. Airy

We parked at a family’s house for a day and enjoyed some fellowship with them. They provided two delicious meals, along with making us feel very welcome.

Then, it was on to the conference! Even though Mt. Airy is a small town (about a quarter of the size of Leavenworth), we had a good turnout. This group was possibly our most punctual group ever. Our hearts are always full of joy as we seek to build up and encourage those who come. It was a good evening.

We parked our bus at a family's house, and another family joined us for lunch Thursday.

Some more chatting.

The family sent us with a bag of goodies--for each member of the family, which included a chocolate bar for us. So sweet.

We had lots of wonderful pack-out help.

Our Bus Guy

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

John spent several days this week working on the bus. Okay, from the pictures, it looks like we have a problem, but it’s really not serious. Removing the wheel made it much easier for him to access that area if it was off. It is all back together now and doing fine after a test drive.

One thing about John that really blesses me is how he does his work without complaining. He can be covered in grease, the project not going well, and he diligently goes about what needs to be done without complaint. He is a great example of persevering on task. And, need I mention? John’s our awesome bus mechanic.

Everyone else is keeping plenty busy. Two days until departure. We’re having a party on Saturday; I’ll try to get some photos.

Love,

Sarah

St. Louis

Monday, September 19th, 2011

We arrived in the area about 1:45 p.m. Friday. Bus got parked uneventfully, and Dad and I went on the “lay of the land” tour (aka scouting out the facility). After figuring out where each session would be, we were thrilled to see our friends, the coordinators, and two more friends show up. We spent the afternoon fellowshipping, setting up, doing music practice, and the dads prayed.

Then, Friday, during dinner, low and behold, Nathan, Melanie, and the girls come in! There was definitely much excitement and chatter that ensued.

The group that came for last weekend’s conference was simply put: incredible. The girls were one of the most attentive groups we have ever had, which made it such a pure delight. The guys were great too. The parents also were attentive and had open hearts.

We always have many stories to tell each other after a conference–and this one it seemed the stories and talk went on for so long. Even though we were physically drained (that’s normal as we push hard), our spirits were extremely blessed. It makes the anticipation for the next trip even higher after such a great conference!

Lots to do between now and Sunday afternoon.

Love,
Sarah

When Nathan introduced Abby, he asked her to say “hello.” Her very enthusiastic “Hewwo!” caused a warm response from the group. On an impromptu whim, we asked Abby to recite several verses she has memorized from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Without any inkling of being shy, she recited it beautifully. It was precious. The enthusiasm she received when she was finished was also sweet.

Before we drove home, Dad took a nap, as he had woken up early Saturday, and we ordered pizza in for supper.

At the end, our coordinators gave us an amazing gift. They had a beautiful, framed plaque with a Scripture verse in the middle, and in the mat, most of the families who had attended the conference, signed and/or wrote us a note. It will be such a treasure. Thank you all!

What a Weekend

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

It’s 11 p.m., and we’re home. Nathan, Melanie, and the girls surprised us by showing up Friday during dinner. The Lord so blessed the conference! My mind is foggy as it’s late, and it’s been a big weekend, so I will write more later, along with pictures.

Sarah

Coil It Is!

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Ladies,

Thank you for taking the time to share. The reason we originally went with the coil was to make it more reader friendly and you all affirmed that. What a blessing the feedback was. We will continue on as we have and know that the majority find the coil a blessing. Thank you again for your feedback and encouraging comments.

Bless you all.

In Christ Jesus,

Steve (and Teri)

Your Feedback?

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

We are making the decision tonight whether to change the binding on the Chores book. Currently, it is plastic coil bound, but we are considering binding it like the other books such as Hearts, Meek and Quiet Spirit, and Preparing Sons. The advantage of the plastic coil is it lies flat very easily when being read, the disadvantage is when we process the books the coil is a significant hindrance to us and without the coil it is much easier to package in boxes.

Thoughts? Is the plastic coil something you have found you really, really appreciate?

Thank you.

In Christ Jesus,

Steve

Sweet Journey is Available!

Friday, September 9th, 2011

We are so very excited to announce that Teri’s new book, Sweet Journey, is now available. It has been a whole-family investment in bringing this labor of love to completion. We have seen the Lord overcome many obstacles to it finally becoming available.

Why am I writing this announcement? Because I believe deeply in my heart that it will help countless moms. It isn’t a self-help book, but it is a book that points moms to the the source of power and grace–Jesus Christ and His Word. I’ve seen how the Lord used His Word in Teri’s life for years as she battled depression and anger while facing each new day with active little ones. I have seen God’s power at work in a life that was struggling and challenged. Instead of using anti-depressants, she relied upon a risen Savior Who is alive, well, and able to restore, empower, and heal.

We receive so many e-mails from struggling moms. We have seen God work in those who were willing to make an effort to “draw nigh” to their Lord as Teri encouraged them in the Word step by step. Frankly, it makes me cry when I read an e-mail back from a mom who earlier was in the depths of despair and now is well along in a Sweet Journey with her Lord. This material is proven.

There are other moms who aren’t in the depths of despair, but they don’t know what they are missing. They are going through life as a Christian, while lacking power and peace. Sweet Journey will greatly benefit them as well because it will guide them in establishing the foundations that are missing in their Christian walk.

There are moms who want to disciple their daughters and don’t know where to begin. This will be a powerful tool in their hands for that.

Also, ladies groups are often going through studies. This Bible study is practical and well-suited for group settings as well. I know there are plenty of other Bible studies out there, so why is Sweet Journey unique? I feel it is because God has first worked a beautiful work in Teri’s life. She has walked down some very deep and dark valleys and tasted of the power of the Savior in her life. She isn’t sharing a quick fix, but a steady, sure, and sweet path with her sisters.

That is why I’m rejoicing!!

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” James 4:8

Daddy Obeyed God

Monday, September 5th, 2011

A highlight of the trip for Abby was our stop in St. Elmo on Monday where we were able to feed the chipmunk colony. Abby loved her time with those little critters and was secretly hopeful she would be able to return sometime later in the trip.

On Wednesday morning, as Abby ate breakfast, she overheard talk about what we might do that day, which included consideration of a trail that went over to St. Elmo. While we eliminated that hike for that day, the name St. Elmo was in the discussion because that is the direction the trail headed. Abby heard the word St. Elmo and thought we were going back.

Then during the hike that we took on Wednesday, Abby was being carried on her daddy’s back. She said to him, “You have one happy little girl.” When asked why, she said that she had heard talk about going back to St. Elmo and she was one excited little girl.

So her Daddy said to her, “Abby, we don’t have any plans to go back to St. Elmo. We talked about a trail that goes that direction, but that isn’t what we are doing today. It was too far for us to go.”

Abby was very disappointed. Later when Melanie learned of Abby’s disappointment in not returning to St. Elmo, Melanie suggested they pray about it.

Everyone greatly wanted to please Abby’s heart so Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, when the little girls were asleep, we discussed ways to hike and go back to St. Elmo. Nathan and Dad made a plan for just that.

The plan was talked about among the adults during breakfast time and again Abby was listening. Abby’s blue eyes sparkled and her face brightened. She exclaimed, “There was no plan, but now there is a plan!”

Later, she told her mommy, “God told Daddy to go to St. Elmo, and Daddy obeyed God.”

After arriving at St. Elmo Thursday morning, it was very chilly, and the chipmunks were hardly around to eat. Instead of crying and being disappointed, Abby accepted it with a sweet attitude. We hiked, and then came back to try again. This time, the chipmunks were very active and very happy to be fed.

Joseph enjoyed taking pictures; in fact, that guy actually captured over four hundred pictures in a short span of time. As Abby fed chipmunk after chipmunk, I occasionally heard her little voice exclaim, “We’ve got business!” (an expression borrowed from Uncle Joseph)

Later on, when asked how long she fed them? “For hours and hours!”

Abby’s spirit was a lesson to her aunt on my relationship with my Heavenly Father. Think about it. Abby wanted something and instead of pushing and begging her daddy, she prayed, and waited. How often, with the Lord, am I wanting something and not patient enough to wait for His answer? Or, if it’s a “no” am I unhappy about it? Do we want anything less than God’s best for our lives?

Love,
Sarah

The chipmunks were happy too. It was a win-win situation.

Happy Labor Day

Monday, September 5th, 2011

I don’t know if one says “Happy Labor Day” but I will. May your day be filled with the joy of the Lord Jesus Christ as you are busy about what He wants for you.

The Maxwells, here in Kansas, have plenty to do, and we are grateful for all the Lord gives us to accomplish. Maybe I’ll get some normal life pictures for you all soon!

Maxwells at the Continental Divide

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Thursday evening, we drove up to the Continental Divide, which was about thirty minutes from our cabin. Although we’ve crossed the divide a number of times at different places throughout our traveling years, we hadn’t been back to this particular spot for about ten years. It was a beautiful night for a sunset, so with camera in hand, Joseph captured the scene, and the rest of us took some individual pictures and enjoyed the sunset. Each moment we had in Colorado was a blessing, and the sunset was a special gift.

Wednesday’s Pictures

Monday, August 29th, 2011

We took Wednesday as an easy day. After a later breakfast, we packed up, and drove awhile on a dirt road, which had its good parts and not-so-good parts. We had been told about a trail that would take us to St. Elmo (the old mining town/chipmunk feeding area), but we weren’t finding it, so Dad decided to park, and then we walked on the road for awhile. We came to a trailhead and took it. Not far into the trail, it was decided that we would need to split-up so the little girls could eat lunch and return to the cabin for their afternoon naps. So, we divided, and when a storm began building, the second group on the mountain turned around. The rest of the afternoon was spent kayaking and canoeing on the ponds. Each day ended with a delightful dinner (planned by Mom), and family Bible time.

Love,
Sarah

Mount Princeton

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Tuesday morning, quite of few of us set out to hike Mt. Princeton, one of Colorado’s 14ners (meaning the mountain is over 14,000 feet). Some stayed back with the little girls.

Five thirty we left the cabin and drove to the trailhead. At that point, we dropped the van, and loaded into Christopher’s truck to drive up further. From the research done, we were planning on parking at the radio towers. It took us almost an hour to drive up the single lane, rocky, rough road, but we made it.

We weren’t totally sure what to expect of the terrain, although most of the group, except for the girls and Jesse, had hiked a 14er before.

At 7 a.m. we left Christopher’s truck, and the first forty minutes was quite easy, just walking along a dirt road. Then, we left the road and followed a path through a meadow. We soon hit a rock field, and we spent the remainder of the hike having to place each footstep among the rocks. Most of the time, we could see the summit in view.

We spent hours going across rock fields, but we pressed on. Around 11, we were on our final ascent. It was literally hand-over-hand as we climbed up the rocks. It would still not be considered a “technical” climb at all by those experienced, but for us it was difficult.

Starting out.

Distance is very deceptive on the mountain. The summit is a very long ways off. You would not be able to discern people close to the summit as they would be so far away.

Taking a break on the ridge.

It was a climb. Dad and I as we approached the summit.

In our final ascent, the rest of the group got ahead, and I suddenly became fearful and told Dad I was done. I couldn’t imagine how we would get back down. I thought I would just sit on the rocks and wait for the others. Looking down all I saw was steep rocks, and looking up was still a hand over hand climb. Dad gently talked me through the situation, encouraging me that the rocks were solid and not slippery, and we would do it together. I needed to keep my eyes only on the rocks near me, not looking up or down, but move on, one “step” at a time. I took Dad’s encouragement and pressed on, and I’m glad I did :-) . It reminds me of a spiritual analogy. If we set our focus on our past, we can become discouraged. If we look to the future, we can also get concerned. We have to focus on what the Lord has for us right now!

The summit was gorgeous, beautiful, amazing! We spent about a half hour on top, taking pictures and talking. Several others had also made the climb, and so we had company up there, and one man took a group picture for us. It was a wonderful experience.

At the end of our picnic lunch, an elderly man, who had been fishing, fell. Dad and Mom were nearby, and the guys ran over to help. The man had cut his face quite badly on the rock, but through the whole thing, he was laughing and talking. We were able to supply his wife with a few items from our first aid kit. Believe it or not, he wanted to continue fishing!

New ITonRamp Course

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

We are excited to inform you that ITonRamp is now offering an HTML course. Let me translate what HTML means — websites! If you want to know how to create websites, this course is for you.

“Ahh, but can’t I just use one of those point and click software apps, or doesn’t even Microsoft Word have a ‘Save as a webpage’ feature?” Yes, technically those software applications create HTML. Now, do they create good, clean HTML — no, certainly not! If something isn’t rendering correctly, do you know how to manually edit the HTML to fix it? What if the pages look good on all except one browser? Knowing HTML and CSS is critical for doing any real website work.

Led by Joseph Maxwell, this course will cover HTML, CSS, code troubleshooting, and some aspects of design and usability. ITonRamp will provide an area where each participant can build a test website and complete assignments.

It’s a 10 week course.

At the Cabin

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

I can hear the sound of water rushing from a nearby mountain stream, and the family is scattered around the cabin. We will be having family Bible time very soon. It’s beautiful and peaceful here.

The morning started off with personal Bible time, and after breakfast, we gathered for a church service. Dad shared from Psalms 106, and I personally felt convicted in the area of needing to not murmur and be grateful. If something doesn’t go the way I would like it to, do I thank the Lord for that opportunity or do I complain? I might be thinking I’m doing great not to complain out loud, but doing it in my heart is the same thing!

We were on our way up into the mountains a little after 2 p.m. It was a two hour drive, and as we drove the familiar road, excitement was building. We have many good memories of years gone by of family trips here. This time, since our family has expanded, we’re staying in a large cabin with enough beds for everyone! After everything was unloaded, we headed to the ponds to kayak. At one time or another, all had an opportunity to be on the water, except for Bethany :-) .

Since we are at a high elevation, we are making sure to drink a lot of water to avoid the dreaded altitude sickness. It is a joy to be together: all fourteen of us. We have much to be thankful for.

Love,
Sarah

Happy 15th Birthday, Mary

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Happy Birthday, Mary! It is a delight to see your love for the Lord Jesus continue to grow. Your servant’s heart is evident, and your joyful spirit blesses many.

Last year we were in Idaho, and this year we’re in Colorado. :-) Even though we celebrated early, today will still be a celebration.

Happy Birthday!

This birthday will be in the mountains!

“… but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).

It’s Been Exciting

Friday, August 19th, 2011

About 10:45 last night, a wild storm blew in with very strong wind, lots of rain, some hail, and plentiful amounts of thunder and lightning. As a result, we lost both power and Internet. Power was restored about 6 a.m. for us, but Nathan and Melanie’s power didn’t come back on until 6 pm tonight, which made their trip preparations more interesting. Internet just came back up for all of us.

So, it’s been a flurry of packing, cleaning, wrapping up last minute details, playing with nieces (for Aunt Anna and Aunt Mary), packing vehicles, and more! Our friends, the C. Family, will ship our Titus2.com orders while we are away, so we restocked them as well (yesterday).

It’s feeling real: we will be in the foothills tomorrow night, as we spend the night in Colorado Springs before driving to Buena Vista Sunday. We would be grateful for prayer as we set out tomorrow.

Love,

Sarah

Happy Birthday, Mom

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Happy Birthday to an incredible mom, grandma, wife, daughter, and mentor to countless! We love you very much, and we are grateful for you allowing the Lord to use you. Truly, you pour your life out as a living sacrifice each day. Thank you for your investment in each one of us.

We love you! Happy 37th Anniversary to you and Dad too.

Anticipation Builds

Monday, August 15th, 2011

This Saturday we will be headed to the Buena Vista, Colorado area!

We are all excited–the Lord opened up doors for what some would term a “vacation,” which would mean we’re not packing conference clothes (we hit the road later in September). This trip is a gift from Grandma and Grandad (Mom’s parents). Thank you, Grandad and Grandma (GiGi).

We’ve been preparing for this trip, physically, for two months. Yes, we exercise normally, but we’ve stepped it up, with all of us doing one or more of the following: running, walking long distances, walking carrying weights, rowing, and other forms of exertion. We plan to do a lot of hiking.

I’ve included a few pictures from a trip we took there back in 2005. It’s been six years!

Wrap Up

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

After our “safari” we loaded into the van, it was apparent we were going to need to eat before the four hour drive home. That was the final surprise. Our special dinner was planned for Lambert’s Cafe, home of the Throwed Rolls. It took a half hour to drive there, and when I saw the overflow parking filled with vehicles and people milling around the front waiting, I thought it would be a long time until we got in. But, John checked, and there was only an hour wait when often it is two to three hours. Some of us went to a nearby store, and then we stayed near the vans chatting. The temperatures were still pleasant, and another storm was coming closer. Lambert’s were true to their word, and in less than an hour, they called over the loudspeakers for us. We walked past the crowded waiting area into the almost festive atmosphere. You have to be there to experience it, but yes, they actually do throw your rolls to you. A young man with red suspenders and bow-tie and an old-fashioned metal cart filled with pans of hot dinner rolls walks through every five or so minutes and calls out with a perfect twang, “Hot rolls!” He’ll repeat it a few more times, and fingers and hands go up throughout the room, trying to catch his attention for a roll. People pause from eating and watch. The guy was amazingly accurate with his throws, and then it was just the question if you could catch it or if he had to throw another one.

It’s a down-home style place, and servers go around with “pass-alongs” and offer you sides such as fried okra, onions and potatoes, molasses/sorgum for your rolls, and other items.

We managed to squeeze into a booth made for 10. And when I say squeeze, I truly mean it. But we were all together. It was a wonderful end to the surprises! I praise the Lord for such a godly father. It was truly a blessing to bless him.

Love,
Sarah

Birthday Surprise #2

Friday, August 12th, 2011

It was a delightful morning for a ride, with a nice breeze blowing throughout the spacious tram. We had purchased from the safari a 50# bag of feed, so we had plenty of treats for the animals. Abby stuck pretty close to Aunt Anna and enjoyed feeding the animals or watching Aunt Anna feed them. Everyone else moved around quite a bit, and it was just an overall incredible time of enjoying God’s amazing creatures.

A zedonk

Sweet Bethany

What a long tongue!

The buffalo's feet didn't actually enter the tram--just the rest of him.

Definitely as close to a buffalo as I've ever been.

The camel was one of our favorites because of how gently he would take the food.

Quite the camel.

A mama and baby zebra. Aren't they sweet? One of my favorite pictures.

It was a wonderful family time!

By the time we were done, Bethany still hadn’t exhausted her “ehh ehhs”, and our bag of feed wasn’t quite gone, but some of the family braved the pouring rain to walk around the “walk through” area, while a few of us opted to stay inside the gift shop. It had been a delightful event.

I’ll wrap it up with a final blog post on our final surprise for Dad.

Sarah

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

About 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nathan, Melanie, and the girls had gone home to finish packing their van, but Dad didn’t know they were doing that. He thought they were putting the girls down for their naps. Christopher and Anna Marie hung around, as they usually do on Sundays, to chat for awhile. We all sat in the living room, casually talking, and thinking about the surprise that was about to be unveiled. We had each packed overnight bags and stowed them in the back of the van, taking opportunities after we came home from church to sneak out and put our bags in the van. Dad still did not know.

Finally, after Nathan texted Mom that they were ready to go, she announced, “Everyone ready?! Let’s go!” An enthusiastic response was given, and Dad sat still, very comfortable and rather bewildered. He wondered where we were going. I think Mom told him it was a surprise, and we all rushed out to the van, with Dad following. His mind was racing, trying to figure out what we had planned! He noticed Nathan and Melanie’s van out in the street, and Abby waved to him. So, they were coming too! The girls were supposed to be taking their naps.

The first stop was to fill the van’s fuel tank. It was 1/2 full, and it didn’t make sense to Dad as 1/2 tank is plenty of fuel. Then we started driving and as we drove, a wild storm was brewing. Dad and Nathan fought strong wind and blowing dust for over an hour, but we were grateful to finally get ahead of the huge storm. Dad was still mystified, since we didn’t seem concerned about bad weather spoiling our plans.

We passed Kansas City, and Dad was definitely thinking. Occasionally, he would make a comment or a guess, and finally he guessed right: the wildlife safari! But, he didn’t know everything. He thought were going directly there (and returning home yet that day), but we weren’t. We had arranged to stay in a hotel, because it was a four hour drive. This was apart of our gift to him. We wanted to make his 60th very memorable, and it was!

We had snacks and then Bible time Sunday night down in the breakfast area.

So, Monday morning dawned, and after individual Bible time, breakfast, and packing out, we drove a half hour to the safari. We again surprised Dad with having a tram (aka — a commuter type of bus with no windows) for our family. The van is less than ideal to tour the park in because only the front two windows open. With the van only two people would be able to hand-feed the animals. But with the tram, everyone could feed the animals!

Mom had been praying for weeks about the weather, because we’ve had weeks of heat with heat indexes up over 100 most days. The Lord gave us a COOL morning: with temperatures in the lower 70′s. Praise HIM!

Joseph took almost all of the pictures we’re posting. He’s incredible.

"Hello!"

Bethany was thrilled with the animals and kept an almost constant stream of "eh ehs" going as she reached for them.

It was a perfect tram to take--easy access to the animals, and the animals stayed mostly outside.

Thankfully Jesse's recovery has continued to progress, so he was okay for Monday.

At least Luther couldn't get his horn inside the tram.

Joseph

Bethany was a happy girl.

Beautiful.

Mr. Emu, and you had to be careful how you fed him. If you dared, you could allow him to get it off your hand.

See that little head?!

We’ll continue on with at least one more post with pictures later.

Love,
Sarah
