Final Weekend Conference, On This Trip

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

After our momentous trek across South Dakota, we arrived at the church early Friday afternoon. It was great timing for all we had been through. We did a “walk through” of the church facility and then began to unload. It seems set up is getting easier each time. Lots of practice must really help!

Setting up Friday.

Music

Friday evening went well. We switched the order of a few of the songs around, and the stage was a bit tight, but the family adapted well to the minor challenges. Several families drove a distance to come, including one who braved the storm we went through.

Building a Vision

Some of us hadn’t slept so well for several nights, but Friday night, we had a refreshing night’s sleep, which we needed. Even though we’ve been in cold weather, we’ve not had to run the heater at night. I think we warm up the cabin :-) . Saturday morning dawned, and about 6 a.m., we were all up and having our individual Bible time. We like to be inside the church by 8 to set up sound, projectors, signs, etc.

We are so grateful to families who give up their weekend to attend a conference. The day goes quickly as we move from session to session, talking with people in between, keeping up with the book tables, and getting things set for the next session. Hearts were definitely open, and we could tell the Lord was moving greatly. Thank you for your faithful prayers for these conferences.

Our final conference for this trip will be in Omaha tomorrow night. Tonight, we are going to be staying at my aunt’s house, and we’re looking forward to that. It feels strange to think we’ll be only three hours from home sweet home.

This Weekend

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

It was a wonderful weekend conference. We still have our last evening to go, on this trip, Monday night, in Omaha, Nebraska. We stopped in Wall, South Dakota, and we’ll be driving to Omaha tomorrow. We’ll report on the conference later, and yes, for those who might know the area, we did go to Wall Drug and experience the experience.

Set Up and Ready

Friday, April 15th, 2011

I forgot about the time change, so we actually arrived around 1:30 p.m. The church has been very gracious to us, and their facility will be perfect. Set up went smoothly. Music practice has been done, and now some are resting. We are looking forward to our last weekend conference for this trip: here in sunny Rapid City!

It’s Beautiful

Friday, April 15th, 2011

The road is dry, green grass can be seen, and the snow is gone! We’re back to spring. We will be arriving at the church around 3 and will begin set up for the conference this weekend.

Just a few minutes ago, snow was lightly salted throughout the hill side. It was very pretty.

On our way again!

Friday, April 15th, 2011

We prayed, and then Dad went to take a rest while we waited. A sheriff came up a little later, and said they were going to route us on another road to get us back on the interstate. We are grateful for the snow ploughs and emergency workers who are dealing with this situation.

So, we’re on our way again! Praise the Lord!

Excitement on the Road

Friday, April 15th, 2011

We’ve had our share of excitement this morning, and it’s not ended yet. We started out this morning around 7:30 a.m., and it was raining. Rain turned to snow and slushy roads. It was very intense driving for Dad as we battled wind, snow, slush, and ice.

We are now waiting, as a semi-truck jackknifed and another truck is in the ditch. We had to exit, so we are waiting for the trucks to clear to be able to continue. We are only about 150 miles from Rapid City, so we’ll still be arriving by mid-afternoon. We will then set up and prepare for this weekend. It appears no one was hurt, and there was no pileup–an incredible praise the Lord!

Tiling

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Right now we are visiting and helping a family who is replacing carpet in their house with tile and hardwood because two of their children have severe asthma. We arrived at the family’s house yesterday afternoon, and the guys set to work immediately. They ripped out two layers of linoleum, put down the backer board, and then laid the tile. They were up until 2 a.m. this morning getting the tile down, so that they can grout today, since we will leave this afternoon for Rapid City.

Watertown Report

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

It was a gorgeous, spring day in Watertown. We’ve experienced a lot of winter weather on this trip, and it was wonderful to have a sunny, warm (50′s) day again. This was the first time a conference was held in a County Extension Center, and the facility worked out great. Set up went smoothly, and after Bible time and dinner, we were ready for the evening.

Dad and Mom before the conference

Twins!

The Lord again blessed the conference, and we are grateful to each family who took the time to come. We are now down to just two more on this trip: Rapid City this weekend, and Omaha Monday evening.

Minot’s Conference

Monday, April 11th, 2011

After an eventful Wednesday evening, and an early morning Thursday, we were completely tired by Thursday evening. We shopped at Wal-Mart, stocking up on some food items and such, and then we had a nice dinner (salad/chili & chips/Oreos), before driving to the church to park for the night. We had our family Bible time before going to bed.

Friday morning, we woke up feeling refreshed. It was raining, but although the forecast called for several inches of snow, the weather did not do that. We set up in the afternoon, and the younger five practiced some music as well.

Anna and I organized books.

Music Friday evening

Saturday morning dawned, cold and misty. We experienced a new issue we’ve never had before. The church’s restrooms were not working because the septic tank drain field saturated with all the melting snow and rain. So, this was definitely going to be a conference stopper. We know the Lord is in control, and we were anxious to see how this was going to work. We prayed that the Lord’s will be done, but it looked pretty hopeless.

Phone calls were made with  no answers to our problem. Then two dads came forward, one whose profession was in septic tank service. We started the conference while they worked the problem. They both missed the first session, but we were able to continue the conference and the restrooms were restored to service.

Many families drove a number of hours to attend: from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada. It was a blessing to be able to meet and get to know them a bit. The young people’s sessions and the dads’ were held in the basement, and we maxed out the rooms, but that’s a good problem to have.

I personally love to see my family in action. They all know what to do, and they do their tasks well. It’s a joy to see them scattered here and there, moving to the next session, talking to those who have come, and helping at the book tables.

We look forward to Watertown, South Dakota’s conference tonight.

Grande Prairie

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

We still needed to give a report on last Monday evening Grande Prairie. We left LaCrete about 9 that morning, and arrived in town a little after 2. We had a few errands to do, which we did, and then we headed for the church around 4. It was only a little after that we became stuck in the church driveway.

Jesse trucked in the books for us, and we continued with the table set up. Our coordinator brought a delicious dinner to the church, including the main dish of moose! Thank you, Mrs. Christa!

A great crowd showed up for the conference, and they even maxed out the parking lot, because I saw vehicles parking in the street. It’s such a joy to be able to share with each group, and to hear how the Lord is working on the hearts of those who came.

God’s Hand #2

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

At that point, John was back out from more communication with the towing company. Steve told him to tell them to come out. They said it would be about an hour before they arrived.

Steve was hoping to be able to give his Feed My Sheep session, but as the time drew closer, it was evident that he was needed in the bus driver’s seat. They used the video recording of the session. We were so grateful that in Oklahoma City we had recorded sessions, just in case we would have a use for them in the event someone was sick and couldn’t fill in for them.

A bobcat arrived that put a large steel plate under the left-front wheel loader’s tire because it was beginning to break through the asphalt. While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, they kept trying to lift the bus with the wheel loader and to put smaller timbers under the wheel. However, each time they did, the timber just sunk into the muck out-of-sight.

Men rallied to do whatever they could to help. This man went and found large timbers and brought them to be used.

The guys worked hard all evening. Safety was a big concern and men were double-checking each other.

At first trying to get even small timbers under the wheel. They weren't able to lift the bus high enough to get large ones in.

And the crowd gathered. Later some brought lawn chairs.

One of many discussions. We were very grateful for the team of men that worked together to get us out!

Many different options were tried. This one was attempting to lift the front wheel, but it was soon decided that that wasn't a good idea.

We were so stuck.

AutoSpa Towing to the rescue! Notice the drive wheels are fairly deep as well. The tag had not broken through yet.

The first attempt was going to be to lift up the back and place timbers under the drive axle, however, he wasn't able to lift it high enough.

Session break time. So, lots of people came out to see what was happening.

Hearts session

Dwelling Together in Unity

The concern always was getting the bus out without damaging it. There was a strong possibility through this whole process that when Uriah was freed, he wouldn’t be drivable even to the point of the frame being permanently damaged.

Steve was able to do part of his Keeping Hearts session, although I did the first 1/2 hour without him. Joseph stepped in to do John’s parts of both sessions for the young people, since John needed to stay outside. Jesse filled in Joseph’s part on Dwelling Together in Unity. It was a team effort, and everyone had good attitudes in switching the roles in which they were used to.

When the tow truck arrived, he tried lifting the back end. That went on for a while but it wasn’t working.

That is when the final attempt came. Some of the family were in giving sessions, and they weren’t aware of the grave danger that Uriah was in! Only Dad, Sarah, John, Jesse, and Mary knew that Uriah might not be drivable.

“O Lord, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble” (Isaiah 33:2).

Outside of Bismarck, North Dakota

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

It’s been another full, great weekend, but I’ll leave you with a few pictures until we can catch up tomorrow on some posts. We are parked for the night at an RV park. We are down to just one more weekend conference (Rapid City, SD) and two single-evening conferences (Watertown, SD and Omaha, NE). This trip has gone fast! A conference report will come later, and we haven’t forgotten about the rest of the bus story in Bow Island Wednesday.

Love,
Sarah for all the rest

God’s Hand #1

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

We had to piece this together, as only John was out the entire time. The rest of us were in and out, depending on our conference responsibilities. This series of posts was mainly written by Mom, with some details added by others.

To answer questions asked, this was a normal street with no signs of having any problems. Imagine the shock when this all happened. We have since found out that some of the roads in Bow Island are not in good repair. We discovered that.

God’s Hand of Protection #1

When Steve drove around the corner to back into the parking lot, he was about to back up, going very slowly, when all of a sudden he felt the bus mushing down. He thought, “oh, no” and instantly threw it in reverse and that’s when the drive axle sunk as well.

Steve turned the bus off, and then tried to get out. The door unlatched, but instantly there was the sound of grinding rock and the door wasn’t moving. He realized right away what had happened. The bus’s wheel was buried enough to put the bus door on the ground, unable to open.

The girls came out, and Sarah saw Dad and Jesse with their heads stuck out the windows. Dad told them, “We’re in trouble.” At that moment, Sarah noticed the bus leaning and the wheels sunk into the asphalt. A wave of unbelief swept over the girls as they took in the scene!

John and Joseph were upstairs setting up chairs with a man who came early to help set up. The man’s wife came in and said to her husband, “Honey, I think you need to come out and look at the bus.” The tone of her voice seemed several notches higher then normal, and they knew right away that there was a problem.

Back outside at the bus scene, Steve looked at the coordinator and said, “We are going to need big tractors to help get us out. Do you know anyone with a farm nearby?” She said she did, and went off to begin to call. Jesse handed Sarah her laptop (she had her camera already with her), and she went inside the church to post a blog post.

About that time, others were starting to show up as well. One was Reg’s sister, who lived across the street. She said her brother was a welder, and she would call him. Reg was key in our rescue operation. He got the other equipment that we needed, helped with the process, and stayed the whole time. If we have a vote, we think Bow Island ought to “Knight” him.

Many of the townspeople gathered around to watch. They all had ideas of how we should be gotten out. Jesse didn’t stay in the bus very long, but as soon as a ladder was located, he was able to climb out the back bedroom window. Steve and I stayed in the bus.

John was doing research on what towing operations were available to come out and help. He reported to Steve, and it was decided which one was best in a nearby town to come. (Auto Spa, funny name but the owner is a pro!) However, in John communicating with the towing company some more, they realized they hadn’t understood the “depth” of the situation. They were able to look at photos on the blog to be able to see what the situation looked like. It was decided that they would wait until the farm equipment arrived before the decision was made to have them come.

Talking to Dad through the window. Notice the ladder? It was our key to get things we needed for the evening, including our conference clothes.

Mom makes it out.

Watching.

The men from the town really pitched in. Notice the 1 inch steel plate under the loader's wheel to keep it from sinking in.

About 6:00, I got out of the bus through the bedroom window and onto the ladder. Steve stayed on the bus.

The first equipment to arrive was an extremely large wheel loader. It was borrowed from a business. John suggested they get the forks closer together, and they said they couldn’t. They angled the loader and put one fork under the skid plates. They started to lift. Others had gotten some big timbers. The goal was to put those under the bus wheel. However, he couldn’t lift it high enough to get things underneath it. The back end of his vehicle began to go up so he had to stop.

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalms 61:2).

Part #2 will come later.

Rescued from the Alberta Mud!

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

As we pulled into the parking lot, our front tires glided over the seemingly firm gravel driveway, but sadly as Uriah climbed the slight hill, it’s back tires started slipping on the mud. Dad tried backing up (He’s an excellent driver and has gotten us out of so many “tuff” situations!), and pretty soon we noticed our back tires disappearing into the mud. The tires quit disappearing when it reached a slick layer of ice underneath! Reality = there was no getting out until there was some assistance! We all started praying. John started to work trying different ways to help us get out, but to no avail. A friendly neighbor noticed our distress and came over with his Yukon and tow rope to see if that would help us get out.

They got everything all hooked up, but as soon as the Yukon started to pull, the rope broke! At that point, we knew that we were going need something much bigger to pull us out. A tow truck was soon to be called, but our coordinator’s husband worked at a truck dealership and offered to bring out a truck to pull out the bus. It was reported that he was on his way, and we were very grateful that we didn’t have to call a tow truck. Meanwhile, we started focusing on getting setup for the conference. Just a little later, a truck pulled up whom Dad thought was the coordinator’s husband.

We all heard that the bus was going to get pulled out now, so we gathered outside to watch. The man got his truck into position and hooked the sling to the bus. We were all so excited when he pulled the bus out! Only afterward, did Dad realize that it was not the coordinator’s husband but a passerby that had kindly stopped to lend a hand. Are these Canadians ever so kind? Eh?

The coordinator’s husband didn’t have a cell phone, so we couldn’t tell him that we were out of the mud hole! He showed up a little later with a truck, and we were so grateful for the effort that he made to come help us!

Over the Bridge!

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

We had a neat experience on Sunday after church. Dad took us to drive over an ice bridge. When driving to La Crete, we didn’t drive the bus over the ice bridge – the shortest route to La Crete and the way most of the local residents would go – due to concerns about the grade on either side of the bridge and possibly “high-centering.” We had to go the long way around which cost us an extra hour.

There was a family who graciously lent us their van while we were in La Crete, and so we were able to use the van to drive to the ice bridge to evaluate whether on the return trip home we thought we could take it with the bus. Of course when we were there, we drove over it and back although the decision was it wouldn’t be good for the bus to try it. The approach was too rough for the bus.

Driving on the ice bridge actually  didn’t seem too odd because there was snow on either side of it, so it felt as if we were driving through an ice field. We were very grateful to Dad for taking us for the drive!

A Weekend Way Up North!

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

This conference gets the award of geographically being our most northern conference! Friday was a busy day! We started out by doing our normal routine of devotions, exercise, breakfast, and getting ready for the day. At 9:00 a.m., some fathers and sons came to set up the chairs. There was much teamwork, and soon everything was prepared  in no time. Meanwhile, many of us worked on the book tables and sound.

Thursday, a lady who works at one of the care centers where we sang had invited us spur-of-the moment over for lunch the next day at her home with her family. We were greatly blessed by her offer of hospitality to a family she didn’t even know. We finished setup and then went over to her house for lunch! We had a wonderful time together, and they cooked a delicious lunch. In addition, Friday afternoon, a mom stopped by the bus and brought us some home-made treats and another mom gave us some at the conference.

It was a joy to see the large group Friday evening. Considering the population of the city and surrounding area, it was amazing the turn out. Music and the Building a Vision session went smoothly! What made this conference a little different was that we had a closing session at 6:30 p.m.. on Saturday. Normally the conference ends after the 2:00 session. Dad and Mom’s closing session was entitled Anger Relationship Poison.

Northern Lights

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

One of the blessings of being able to travel is the experience of some different things. This is the farthest north that I have been. As we were driving the other day, I realized that there might be the chance of seeing the northern lights (aurora borealis). I checked and it looked like there was a slight chance that we might see this amazing phenomena. But I also prayed, as I know that God controls the weather, and the space weather, and that He could send the northern lights. And, He did! It was a beautiful demonstration to me of how He answers small and seemingly insignificant requests like this.

This Weekend

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

It’s 10:30, and it’s been an incredible weekend. The day didn’t end until after 9 p.m. tonight, as Dad and Mom did a special “wrap up” session, and by the time we talked, and fellowshipped some more and packed up the book tables, it was after 9. After family Bible time, we saw a special surprise tonight. I’ll leave it with that, but we’ll post on it later. We’ll do a “real” post on the conference tomorrow or Monday; I wanted to give you a few pictures for now!
