The Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar Family & Managers of Their Homes and Managers of Their Chores
You know how much has to be accomplished in the Duggars' home on a daily basis!
In the Duggars’ book, The Duggars: 20 and Counting, Chapter 7 is titled “Organization Tips that Saved our Sanity.” In that chapter, along with other tips, they share details of how they are using the Managers of Their Homes and Managers of Their Chores books.
The year after MOTH was published, the Duggars ordered a copy. The Duggars explain how Managers of Their Homes (MOTH) is a tool that allows them to keep up with their large family’s needs. Managers of Their Homes was written for homeschooling families, but non-homeschooling families have found the information to be helpful and pertinent to them as well.
The MOTH book doesn't tell you how you should schedule your day. Instead, it is full of tips, advice, and guidance to help you create a schedule that meets the needs of your family. The Duggars used the MOTH book and Scheduling Kit to create their own family schedule.
You’re probably wondering how many children the Scheduling Kit that comes with Managers of Their Homes accommodates, and whether there were enough pieces to work for the Duggars? The kit includes enough colored paper for a mother and seven children, but during the checkout process we ask how many children are in your family so that if more colors of paper are needed we can include them (free of charge). As the Duggar family has grown and their needs have changed, they have updated and modified their schedule so that it continues to meet their needs.
We have often noticed that as a family increases in size, it is all the more critical that organization also increases. A disorganized family with two children might be able to get by, but a disorganized family with four or even eight children often finds itself in crisis mode! That’s probably why the Duggars share in the book that the scheduling and chore books have been “lifesavers” for them.
As we were developing the Managers of Their Chores book and ChorePack system, the Duggars were one of the families that we asked to test our new material. They liked the system so much they are continuing to use it! The Chore book gives ideas on creating and then implementing a successful chore system for your family, and the ChorePacks help keep children on task. For the Duggars, it is the younger children in their family who wear and use ChorePacks. One especially creative idea that they use in their ChorePacks is that the last card in each ChorePack says to “Report to Mom or your buddy.” This is a great reminder to the child to make sure that they “report in” that their work is done.
What is the key to Mrs. Duggar being a joyful mother to nineteen children? Is it the schedule or chore system? No. The key is her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and the strength that He gives. While the schedule and chore system have been invaluable aids along the way, they are simply tools!
